Gerhard Bernhard von Pölnitz , from 1670 Baron von Pölnitz (originally Poellnitz , also Gerhardt Bernard ) (born January 18, 1617 in Oberpöllnitz ; †  August 2, 1679 in Buch ) was a major general in Brandenburg , Knight of the Order of St. John , politician, envoy in London , in the Hague and in Mainz .

Life

As the son of Hans Georg von Pöllnitz (1577–1622) and Anna Petronella von Höll, he came from the Vogtland noble family von Pölnitz . He founded the line based in the Electorate of Brandenburg, which was confirmed on February 14, 1676. On October 20, 1654, Pölnitz was appointed chamberlain to the elector. In 1657 he was promoted to colonel in the bodyguard and stable master. In the summer of 1658 Pölnitz stayed as the Kurbrandenburg ambassador at the imperial court in Vienna . In 1664 he killed the treasurer Gebhard Truchseß zu Waldburg (* October 20, 1638, † October 9, 1664) in a duel .

On February 10, 1666 he was promoted to major general. In this function he became governor of the twin cities of Berlin-Cölln on May 23, 1670 . The elevation to the baron class took place by decree of October 5, 1670.

In 1669/1670 Pölnitz owned the Buch bei Berlin, Karow and Birkholz estates . acquired by Roebel from the last . From 1672 to 1675 he was envoy to the Hague ( States General ).

He was buried in the crypt of the previous building of the Buch Castle Church. Fontane reports that he saw the coffin and the mummified body, but could not guarantee that the date of death he had read (August 2, 1679) was correct. In 1923 the crypt was walled up.

family

On March 23, 1642, in 's-Gravenhage , he married an illegitimate daughter of the Dutch prince and hero Moritz von Orange-Nassau , Eleonora von Nassau (* approx. 1620; † March 1700). She was a biological cousin and close confidante of Princess Luise Henriette of Orange , who married the Elector Friedrich Wilhelm of Brandenburg in 1746 .
