Wilhelm von Brandt (born September 29, 1644 in Küstrin ; † December 18, 1701 ) was a Brandenburg-Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

Wilhelm was a member of the Brandenburg aristocratic family Brandt and a son of the Brandenburg Privy Councilor, New Mark Chancellor and Director of the New Mark Chamber of Commerce, as well as the heir to Hermsdorf and Wutzig, Christian von Brandt († May 1663) and Gertrud von Rühlicke from the House of Gralow. His brothers were Christoph von Brandt (1630-1691), Brandenburg-Prussian diplomat and statesman, Ludwig von Brandt (1640-1711), Brandenburg-Prussian Privy Council and Chancellor of the Neumark, Eusebius von Brandt (1642-1706), Kurbrandenburg-Prussian President of the Court of Appeal, as well as court master of the queens Elisabeth and Sophia Charlotte , Friedrich von Brandt, Brandenburg-Prussian secret council and envoy and Paul von Brandt (1650–1697), Brandenburg-Prussian major general.

Military career

Brandt attended the Joachimsthaler Gymnasium and was registered as a student at the University of Frankfurt (Oder) in 1665 . In the same year he became a cornet with the regiment on horseback of the infantry general Johann Georg Fürst von Anhalt-Dessau . However, he left this in 1666 and went to Holland. In 1670 he became chamberlain to the Great Elector . In 1674 he became a captain in the regiment of Count Christian Albrecht von Dohna , and in 1678 then lieutenant colonel in the Derfflinger regiment .

In 1682 he led Prussian troops to East Frisia to support the local estates. On January 21, 1685, as a colonel , he commanded a regiment on foot. During the war against the Turks , he was General adjutant of Lieutenant General Hans Adam von Schöning . He distinguished himself at the siege of Ofen in 1686 and was promoted to major general on October 15, 1689 . Nine days later he became governor of Pillau and chief of the garrison there and of the "Belling Regiment on Foot" . With 6,000 men he was back in Hungary in 1690, where he distinguished himself at Peterwardein . On April 1, 1692 he became governor of Magdeburg and on June 25, 1693 Lieutenant General. As such, he led the 6,000-strong Brandenburg auxiliaries against the Turks again. They succeeded in sieging and taking Belgrade . In 1698 he was commissioned to occupy Elbing , which he was able to achieve peacefully. On July 7, 1701 he became governor of Küstrin . He died barely six months later.

Brandt was married to Charlotte von Brandt (1655–1675) since 1669. In 1681 he went into a second marriage with Luise von Borstell (1654-1727). His children were:
