particularities | One of the best preserved tower mounds in the Münsterland; at the same time ground monument . |
The Barenborg is a historic monument from the village of Holtwick , a district of the municipality of Rosendahl in the Coesfeld district in North Rhine-Westphalia . The 2.6 hectare area around the Grautenanlage is designated as a nature reserve.
The model for the fortification , which was located on the old connecting path between Ahaus and Coesfeld , was the Motte castle type (tower hill castle) of the French Normans , which had been in use since the second half of the 10th century.
It probably served the Lords of Ahaus as a border castle to secure their territory against the serious attacks of the then expanding bishops of Münster . It is not known exactly when the Barenborg was built.
The center of the Barenborg consisted of a 3 m high tower hill with a diameter of about 25 m. A stone tower stood on top of it, at least found remains of the wall indicate this. An approximately 16 m wide and water-bearing moat surrounded this center. This moat was surrounded by a 1 m high and 10 m wide wall . The access was via a 60 m long embankment 10 m wide. The entire complex was in turn surrounded by a ditch . The connection between the wall and the core of the complex was created by a wooden bridge construction.
Presumably - but this has not been scientifically proven - the Barenborg was destroyed in the armed conflict between the Lords of Ahaus and the Prince-Bishops of Münster around 1398. In any case, in 1406 it passed into episcopal ownership through a forced sale to Bishop Otto IV von Hoya .
Today the Barenborg is considered a ground monument that is one of the best preserved tower mounds in the Münsterland . The moats are location for a versatile swamp grave Flora as water lily , plantain , Seggengräser and more. In addition, the dense sloe and blackberry bushes on the lonely tower hill offer protection for some rare endangered songbird species .
