The Heidesee is a 5.2 hectare nature reserve southeast of Coesfeld in North Rhine-Westphalia . The center of the area is a flat heather pond of the same name, which is surrounded by swamp forest and open heather landscape . The origin of the water goes back to the last ice age . It is assumed that the Heidesees depression is a blown-out layer of drifting sand .
The Heidesee lies in the middle of the Coesfeld Heath , a sandy forest area that extends from the Goxel housing estate in the northeast over the peaks of the Monen- and Hünsbergs to the Heubach lowlands in the area of the Coesfeld / Borken district border. The Coesfeld Heath is very popular as a local recreation area with walkers, joggers and mountain bikers and is accessible through many paths. The open areas around the Heidesee are grazed by Heidschnucken . The entire nature reserve is fenced and should not be entered. However, an approximately 1 km long hiking trail leads around the site and offers informative insights. At the main entrance on the Coesfeld side there is a notice board with the most important information.
flora
The open landscape around the pond is only a meager remainder of the second half of the 19th century increasingly scrubby Coesfelder Heath. As typical heath vegetation leaved heath , heather and sand lean lawns found. The early Haferschmiele is also at home on the sandy soil. In the open area there are some juniper bushes with bite protection . Typical bog plants have settled on the edge of the lake with vaginal cottongrass , cranberries , peat moss and round-leaved sundew .
fauna
The Heidesee is a well-known spawning area for the endangered moor frog . Many species of insects , including grasshoppers , dragonflies and solitary bees , are native to the lake . The peat damsel is a common dragonfly. Buried in their funnel, ant lions , which develop into ant maids , chase after their prey. The nature reserve is also home to forest lizards and tiger beetles .
