The Heubach , the lower reaches of which is called Halterner Mühlenbach , is a 30.7 km long orographically right tributary of the Stever in North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany . Since 1930 the brook no longer flows directly into the Stever, but together with it feeds the Haltern reservoir .

The catchment area of the Heubach has a size of approx. 296 km², it consists largely of sandy soils, the predominant land use is arable farming and grassland, on the last kilometers also forest areas of the Hohe Mark .

course

The Heubach rises between Coesfeld and Hochmoor on the edge of the Kuhlenvenn not far from the 106 meter high Hünsberg on the border between the districts of Borken and Coesfeld . Originally, its natural spring was further south near what is now Steveder Campground. In the course of the drainage of the White Fens , the former largest upland moor in the Münsterland , it was extended to the north in a largely straight line and expanded in a canal-like manner.

As early as Stevede, the Heubach takes in numerous smaller tributaries from unnamed canals that originally served to cultivate peatlands. After the confluence of the Tackekanal and the Homannsgraben north of Maria Veen , the stream now runs in a naturally curved bed in a south-easterly direction. He roams through the outskirts of Dülmen - Hausdülmen , where the Kettbach and Tiberbach flow, and then turn in a south-westerly direction. From Mühlenbrok the Heubach is called Mühlenbach. At Sythen Castle, it divides into two bypasses, one of which is the Sandbach flowing in from the east and the other flowing past the Sythen watermill . In the Stockwiese district in the Mühlbachtal, the arms of the water meet again and flow in a strongly meandering manner and provided with oxbow lakes up to the confluence with the town mill in the Haltern reservoir.

Nature reserves on the Heubach

There are a number of nature reserves in the Heubach lowlands :

  • As a wet meadow area with a central excavation lake , the Kuhlenvenn at the source of the Heubach is a supra-regionally important retreat for waders and meadow birds .
  • In the Fürstenkuhle the remains of the former high moor and a central heather pond have been preserved.
  • The Heubach meadows near Maria-Veen are subject to the Münsterland wetland protection program. Rare species such as the stonechat , lapwing and curlew breed here . The rare otter has been returning to the Heubach for several years . Thousands of arctic geese come regularly. Numerous migratory birds and winter guests rest in the Heubach meadows and the fields down the stream. These include species such as the white- fronted goose , the bean goose or the crane . For a few years now, the crane has also been breeding at the neighboring Lavesum military training area. To the west is the wild horse track, also designated as a nature reserve, in the Merfelder Bruch.
  • At Hausdülmen the ponds are in the Heubach lowlands of the Duke of Croÿ , where various biotopes have developed on a small scale. Otters and other rare species such as the swamp darter , which is the only Westphalian occurrence here, also live here. Hundreds of great egrets gather here in autumn and winter .
