Hochmoor is a district of the city of Gescher in the Borken district in North Rhine-Westphalia . It is located in the western Münsterland in the Münster administrative district .

history

The history of the place began with the systematic mining of peat , which started in 1906 in the south of Tungerloh-Pröbsting . The current district developed from the workers' settlement belonging to the peat factory. In 1912 an elementary school was built in the village. After the Second World War , displaced persons from the former German eastern regions were housed here. The place, which belonged to Tungerloh-Pröbsting until 1969, became part of the community of Gescher in 1969. In 1972 the inauguration of the Hochmooraner Friedhof took place, three years later the inauguration of the St. Stephen's Church followed. In 1983 the school building became the home building, which is run by the Hochmoor Heimatverein.

Until 1987, a branch of the Münster correctional facility was housed in Hochmoor .

The place name goes back to the White Fens . This raised bog was the largest bog area in Westphalia until the middle of the last century . Today it is largely drained. In the vicinity of the village, the Fürstenkuhle and the wet meadow area of the Kuhlenvenn, two remnants of the White Fens, are designated as nature reserves .

Culture and economy

Worth seeing in the village are the Heimathaus, the nature park Hochmoor and the St. Stephen's Church. There is also a memorial to commemorate the fate of the forced laborers in Gescher and Hochmoor, which was inaugurated in 2010. The Grünes Mitte Hochmoor park was opened in 2011.

In Hochmoor there is a Catholic elementary school with around 100 students and the St. Stephen's Kindergarten with around 75 children. The industrial company Ruthmann has its headquarters in Hochmoor.
