General

The Kuhlenvenn, located in the source region of the Heubach , is a remnant of the White Fens . The White Fens between Velen and Coesfeld was the largest moorland in Westphalia until the middle of the 20th century . Today it is largely drained, pitted and cultivated . In contrast to the nearby Fürstenkuhle , however, no remains of the former high moor have been preserved here. Rather, the Kuhlenvenn consists of extensively used grassland and wet meadows with blanks and an artificially created lake from which sand was extracted between 1984 and 1988 - among other things for the construction of the A31 . The Kuhlenvenn has developed into an internationally important refuge for water , wading and meadow birds of all kinds, which use the habitat for breeding , foraging, as a resting place or for wintering.

In the west and east of the area, right on its border, there are two massive shelters from which the bird life can be observed without the animals being disturbed. A footpath leads past the excavation lake from east to west across the nature reserve and thus connects the two observation stations.

The Biological Station Zwillbrock manages the nature reserve Kuhlenvenn and the Wildlife Protection Society supports (NABU) Coesfeld in work assignments and bird counts.

flora

The flora of the Kuhlenvenn is typical of the different types of biotope, of which fat meadows and pastures with a total of around 33 hectares and the excavation water with 9 hectares make up the largest part. Here are u. a. various rushes , sedges , grasses , buttercups , herbs and aquatic plants are native. The area is interspersed with wall hedges ( hornbeam , mountain ash ), rows of trees, bushes and groups of shrubs ( blackberry , buckthorn , sand birch , black alder , common snowball , oak , willow ).

fauna

The Kuhlenvenn is known for its diverse bird fauna. The species most worthy of protection include a number of rare water birds , waders and meadow birds such as the curlew , the lapwing , the cormorant , the godwit , the shoveler and the little grebe . These are on the red list as well as the red kite , sparrowhawk and kestrel as well as little owl , meadow pipit and barn swallow , which are also native to the Kuhlenvenn. In addition, many other birds are regularly or to be found now and then in the Fens, about Bläss- , seeds and Gray Goose , Ruff , Common Snipe , Red-throated Diver , green and redshank , gray and egrets , oystercatchers , wagtail , Coot , Whitethroat , grebes , Tufted , Reed bunting , mallard , marsh warbler and wagtail . The skylark has been strongly pushed back in the course of rewetting and has not been observed since 2009.

Behind the bird fauna, the importance of the rest of the fauna of the Kuhlenvenn takes a back seat. Some amphibian species like the common frog , natterjack toad , moor frog and pond newt feel at home in the wetlands and blanks, while mud whipers populate the excavation lake . Of the native reptile species , blindworms and forest lizards can be found in the fens. Broad-winged bat and water bat stand out among the mammals .
