The Kranenmeer (or Kranenmoor ) is a 0.75 hectare lake and a nature reserve in the municipality of Heiden in Westmünsterland . The former heather pond is located in one of the few heather bogs that are still preserved in this region.

The Kranenmeer nature reserve was designated for the first time in 1950 and now extends well beyond the water with a size of around 140 hectares. A 9-hectare area - the lake with its immediate surroundings - is also designated as FFH area DE-4207-303 Kranenmeer and is therefore part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas .

geography

The Kranenmeer is located in the southern part of the Heiden municipality, near the border with Dorsten . On the Dorsten side, Rhade is the next town about 3 km away. It is about 5 km to the north of the village of Heiden, with the Buschhausen and Leblich farmers in between . An old country road runs west of the nature reserve , which today is hardly relevant for traffic.

Location in the water system

The Kranenmeer is fed by some unnamed rift waters that come from the north. Towards the south it flows over similar small streams into the Kalten Bach , which empties over the Hammbach into the Lippe .

Surname

The name Kranenmeer goes back to a former Kranenhof that existed in the immediate vicinity.

Flora and fauna

Larger bank areas are overgrown with onion rush grass , pennywort corridors and significant stocks of frogweed. The body of water is the habitat of some highly endangered amphibian and dragonfly species such as the moor frog , crested newt , lesser grenade eye and glossy rush damsel . To the east of the water there is a small, well-developed alder forest with occurrences of the swamp violet .
