The Amtsvenn is a moorland (Low German: Venn ) in the northwestern Münsterland in North Rhine-Westphalia , right on the Dutch border. It lies between the places Epe , Alstätte and Graes .

General

In Aamsveen, the Netherlands.

The Amtsvenn is almost 9 km² on the German side and consists of three parts, which were named after the neighboring towns: Alstätter Venn , Eper Venn and Graeser Venn . Across the border, it continues in the 144 hectare Dutch Aamsveen , south of Enschede . The Amtsvenn was only opened in 1929 when the road from Epe to Alstätte was built.

Until the beginning of the 1970s, the farmers of the neighboring villages in the Amtsvenn were digging peat . Many water-filled peat cuttings still show this today. In the center, peat was mined industrially until 1982, so that only a few raised bog areas have survived.

The core of the Amtsvenn has been under nature protection since 1983. The earlier, smaller nature reserves with the names Amtsvenn (133 ha) and Hündfelder Moor (184 ha) were expanded and merged in 2004 under the name of Amtsvenn - Hündfelder Moor . The new nature reserve covers 893 hectares.

The eastern part of Amtsvenns forms under the name E per-Graeser Venn second nature reserve with 289 ha. Grasses Venn Biological Station operates Zwillbrock the sheep Moorhof .

In the Amtsvenn there are still many plants and animals typical of high moorland, including teal , teal , stonechat , bluethroat , spotted moorhen and goat milkers .
