Baroque church of St. Franziskus in Zwillbrock

In 1651 the Minorites established a mission station in Zwillbrock to look after the Catholics in the neighboring Netherlands, especially in Groenlo and the Borculo rule . This mission station became a residence in 1657 and a convent in 1670.

On 6 October 1717, the foundation stone of the present church of St. Francis was placed, which was completed in 1719 or 1720, but only on April 24, 1748 by Bishop Franz Bernardin Verbeck ordained . The church was rebuilt and expanded in 1765 and 1782. The monastery was closed and demolished in 1811. The church with its valuable baroque furnishings was preserved. In 1858 it was elevated to a parish church of an independent parish.

In contrast to many other churches in the immediate vicinity of Zwillbrock, the Church of St. Franziskus was spared during the Second World War . As a result, the entire baroque interior has been preserved in its original condition, unique in the entire Münsterland. From 2013 to 2015 the church and its furnishings were extensively restored.

Zwillbrocker Venn

The Zwillbrocker Venn (more rarely also called Zwilbroeks veen ) and the Ellewicker Feld directly next to it are two nature reserves on the German-Dutch border, west of Vreden , and border the Dutch communities of Berkelland and Winterswijk .

The nature reserves are breeding grounds for more than 100 species of birds. Germany's largest black-headed gull colony with around 16,000 seagulls breeds in these marshland . Furthermore, the Zwillbrocker Venn is the northernmost breeding area for flamingos in Europe . More than 40 flamingos can be found there.
