), in the local dialect: Grol or Grolle , is a small town in theLocation and economy
Groenlo is located in the northeast of the province, in the Achterhoek region , not far from the German city of Vreden . Groenlo shares a small train station with Lichtenvoorde on the Zutphen - Winterswijk line . The Grolsch brewery was located here from 1615 to 2003 and moved to Enschede in 2004 . Tourism and agriculture are important for the economy.
history
Groenlo belonged to the Lords of Borculo until 1236 , who sold it to the Counts of Geldern (since 1339: Dukes of Geldern ) that year. It received the 1277 town charter and developed for its convenience to a strong fortress sstadt. The phrase “zo vaste as Grolle” = as firm as Groenlo is still used in the region today.
Nevertheless, during the Eighty Years' War, the general Moritz von Nassau managed to take the city for the rebellious Netherlands after the siege in 1597 . His adversary Ambrosio Spinola recaptured it in 1606 , after which in 1627 Friedrich Heinrich Groenlo finally conquered the United Netherlands after heavy fighting . Groenlo then fell into a less important border town in the 18th century.
