Philip Rovenius
Philippus Rovenius (also Philipp Roven , Dutch Filips van Rouveen ; * before January 1, 1574 in Deventer ; † October 10th, October 11th, 1651 in Utrecht ) was a Roman Catholic bishop and university professor .
Life
Rovenius was the son of the rector of the chapter school near St. Leubin in Deventer and was baptized on January 1, 1574. He first attended the school in his hometown and then went to the University of Leuven . There he devoted himself to the study of theology and received his licentiate . In 1599 he was ordained a priest . Shortly afterwards he became head of the Dutch priest training in Cologne and professor of theology there. The appointment was made by Sasbout Vosmeer .
In 1606, after the success of the Spaniards in the Eighty Years' War , Vosmeer appointed Rovenius General Vicar of the Diocese of Deventer and on March 15, 1607, Dean of the Chapter of St. Plechelmus in Oldenzaal . On January 2, 1615 he became provost of St. Plechelmus. During his time as dean, he tried to improve the situation of the clergy there.
After the death of Vosmeer, Rovenius was able to assert himself as his successor in the office of Vicar Apostolic of the Dutch Mission. On October 11, 1614, Pope Paul V appointed him . On August 20, 1618, a request was submitted to the Pope to raise Rovenius to higher dignity. Paul V finally appointed him Archbishop of Philippi on August 17, 1620 . His episcopal ordination took place under the Archbishop of Mechelen Jacobus Boonen and the Bishop of Antwerp Johannes Malderus . It was based first in Oldenzaal, then in Groenlo and finally in Utrecht . Like his predecessor, he was also in conflict with the Jesuits .
Rovenius traveled to Rome in 1622 to ask for the help of the church. Through Pope Gregory XV. however, he received little support. This did not change until 1639 under the new Pope Urban VIII. On March 10, 1640, after a dispute with the state government, Rovenius was sentenced to lifelong banishment from the Netherlands and confiscation of his property, including his library, which was valuable for the time which benefited the Utrecht City Library. On June 27, 1649, Rovenius celebrated his 50th anniversary as a priest in an abbey near Brussels. He wandered about and became seriously ill. Finally he died in Utrecht. He was also buried there.
His achievements include the reorganization of the Catholic Church in the Netherlands and the efforts to implement the results of the Council of Trent . He was friends with Cornelius Jansen .
