Sasbout Vosmeer

Sasbout Vosmeer (also Sasbold or Sasboldus ; proper spelling Sasbout Michielsen ; born March 13, 1548 in Delft ; † May 3, 1614 in Cologne ) was a Roman Catholic Archbishop .

Life

Vosmeer was the son of a mayor's daughter from the Sasbout family. He probably attended the school in Naaldwijk . Around 1564 he went to the University of Leuven . There he received a master's degree in philosophy . He then took up a study of theology at the Jesuit College of Leuven , among others under Robert Bellarmin . He stayed in contact with him, but switched to Michael Bajus at the university. On March 22, 1572, he received the Dom Tower in Utrecht by Archbishop Friedrich V. Schenck of Toutenburg the priesthood and 1574 in Leuven, the licentiate in theology. However, he initially continued his studies, but fled to Cologne in 1579 from the war drive.

Vosmeer was offered the office of Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Utrecht in 1582 by Jan van Bruhesen in Cologne . He refused and went to Rome . On February 2, 1583 he returned and on May 21, 1583 he accepted the office of vicar general. Due to the conflict in the Netherlands and the different ideas about crown and church, the Dutch dioceses initially remained vacant. Responsibilities changed between the high-ranking clergy in the region. On August 14, 1591, Vosmeer became dean of St. Maria ten Hove in The Hague . He was also concerned with the interests of the Catholic Church.

Vosmeer left for Rome on March 12, 1602, where he arrived on April 17 to report on the situation. On September 9, 1602, Pope Clement VIII appointed him titular archbishop of Philippi and apostolic vicar of the Dutch mission, as an appointment as archbishop of Utrecht had become impossible for political reasons. The episcopal ordination took place on September 22nd, 1602. He left Rome on April 1, 1603 and arrived in Cologne on May 2, 1603. There he first rearranged the chapter that was in exile. In the following years he found himself in constant conflict with the Jesuits . When Lingen was re-Catholicized in 1605, Vosmeer moved his bishopric there. In 1606 the resettlement was completed. In the same year the plague broke out in Lingen and Vosmeer is said to have gone from house to house during this time and visited the sick.

In May 1608, Vosmeer was forced to move his bishop's seat back to Cologne due to the changed political situation. From Cologne he undertook several trips to the Dutch area under which he was responsible. In 1613 he founded a seminary in Cologne for the training of priests for the Archdiocese of Cologne and another seminar in Leuven for the training of priests for the Diocese of Haarlem .

He was buried in the Franciscan Church in Cologne.
