El Greco: Portrait of the Cardinal Inquisitor Fernando Niño de Guevara (around 1600)

Fernando Niño de Guevara (* 1541 in Toledo ; † January 8, 1609 in Seville ) was Archbishop of Seville (1601-1609) and Spanish Grand Inquisitor (1600-1602).

Life

He came from an aristocratic family, studied law in Salamanca and was promoted to cardinal by Pope Clement VIII in Rome on June 5, 1596 . From April 21, 1597 to January 8, 1599 he was cardinal priest of the titular church of San Biagio dell'Anello and then cardinal priest of San Martino ai Monti . In 1599 he returned to Seville, where he was appointed Grand Inquisitor in 1600 and Archbishop of Seville on April 30, 1601 . A short time later, at the instigation of the Jesuits , Clemens ordered his dismissal as Grand Inquisitor, which King Philip III. 1602 prevailed. Until his death he remained Archbishop of Seville.

Portrait of El Greco

Niño de Guevara is best known for the portrait made by El Greco in 1600 , which is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York . The person depicted is traditionally identified with Niño de Guevara. In his novella El Greco paints the Grand Inquisitor , Stefan Andres used the - albeit rather freely interpreted - circumstances of the painting's creation to examine the relationship between art and power.
