Johannes Malderus

Johannes Malderus (actually Jan van Malderen ; born August 14, 1563 in Sint-Pieters-Leeuw ; † October 21, 1633 in Antwerp ) was a Roman Catholic theologian , university professor and bishop .

Life

Malderus studied philosophy at the University of Douai and then theology at the University of Leuven . In 1586 he received a chair for philosophy in Leuven. On August 31, 1594, he was there for the doctor of theology doctorate . On August 1, 1596, Philip II of Spain was appointed professor of scholastic theology , who had set up this professorship himself. In 1598 he became president of the Löwener pastoral seminar in addition to his regius professorship . In 1602 he was appointed rector of the university.

In 1611 Malderus was appointed as the successor to Johannes Miraeus and on August 7, 1611 , he was ordained bishop by Mathias Hovius , the Archbishop of Mechelen . Malderus carried out reforms in his diocese, including dealing with the Calvinists . In his will in 1633 he ordered the establishment of the Malderus College , in which scholarship holders for theology in Leuven should be accommodated. During his time as Bishop of Antwerp, he was also Abbot of Hemiksem .
