Gendringen is a Dutch village in the municipality of Oude IJsselstreek , which belongs to the Achterhoek region in the province of Gelderland . The village has 4,110 inhabitants and is located on the Oude IJssel river . Gendringen lies directly on the border between Germany and the Netherlands and has a transition to the neighboring town of Anholt , which is part of the town of Isselburg ( Borken district ). The national border runs in a west-east direction in the south of Gendringen. On the Dutch side, Gendringen borders on the municipalities of Montferland , Doetinchem and Aalten .

An important traffic route is the federal motorway 3 , which connects the village via the motorway connection 4 ( Rees - Bocholt ) with the Ruhr area and the northwestern city of Arnhem . The Westphalian city of Münster can be reached quickly via the federal highway 67 to the south . In addition, the provincial roads N317, N335 and N816 are important for the place.

The former municipality of Gendringen

Before January 1, 2005, there was an independent community of Gendringen with a population of around 21,000. As a result of the municipal reorganization in the Netherlands, the municipality of Gendringen was merged with the municipality of Wisch to form the newly formed municipality of Oude IJsselstreek .

Village life, clubs and events

  • The Oranjevereiniging Gendringen organizes the festivities around the annual national holiday (Koningsdag). She is also the organizer of discos for children ( disco voor kids ), the Night of Oranje (over 18), senior events and bike tours.
  • The scouting group Gendringens ( Scouting Gendringen ) organizes leisure activities for young people and children. Canoe tours, group trips, tent camps, building with wood, expeditions into nature are offered.
  • The Ondernemersvereniging Gendringen is an association of around 40 companies in Gendringen that coordinate various activities in the village. Recurring events are the spring festival, the Gendringse fietsvierdaagse (bicycle days in June), Kirmes Gendringen (August), day of the open monument (October), Intocht Sinterklaas (Nikolausfest), moonlight shopping and the Christmas and goose market.
  • The Oudheidkundige Vereniging Gemeente Gendringen (OVGG) is the history association of the municipality of Gendringen. It has 800 members and has existed since 1979, so it was founded when the political community (Gemeente) Gendringen still existed. The OVGG participates in the annual Days of the Open Monument, organizes excursions, helps with the restoration of historical buildings and provides general information about the local history of Gendringen and the surrounding area.
  • The Ronde van Gendringen cycle races took place around the village from 1937 to 1939 and Dwars door Gendringen from 1951 to 2005 . From 1996 onwards, professional cyclists could also take part. However, due to a lack of sponsorship money, this traditional event had to be abandoned.
