Sights and monuments

The Walburgis Church

The Walburgis Church (Sint-Walburgiskerk) was built in Netterden as early as 1200 to 1225 . This is evidenced by the foundations, which are made of tuff , which was no longer used as a building material here from the 13th century. The tufa, which is of volcanic origin, was transported from southern Germany down the Rhine to the Lower Rhine. The church towers that still exist in the area around Netterden, in Zeddam , Beek , Etten and Gendringen are also made of tuff.

The architectural style of the Netterden Church was originally Romanesque. It was later rebuilt in Gothic style, with Romanesque elements still visible until the renovation in the 19th century. Through the Reformation , the church came to the Reformed community, before it was returned to the Roman Catholic Church in 1800 and enlarged and rebuilt in 1875 by the imperial architect Pierre Cuypers . Between 2013 and 2014 the interior of the church building and the outside area were restored.

Castle De Woldenburg

Little remains today of the buildings of the medieval Fort De Wordenburg (Kasteel De Woldenburg) . Originally it was north of the pastorate , where there is now a farm. To the south and south-west of the pastorate, which also belonged to the complex of the fort, there are still remains of the moat (Kasteelgracht). The pastorate is located in the northwest of the old village church.

Pastorate

The pastorate used to belong to the complex of Fort De Wordenburg and was located in the outer bailey . It was built not far from the church, northwest of the church tower. Behind the building, on today's Papenkampseweg, remains of the moat are still preserved. At the end of the 18th century, the pastorate was expanded because it housed both the sexton and the teacher. After a dike breakthrough in January 1814, the pastorate was under water. After the school director (schoolmeester) C. Kroes became the owner of De Woldenberg , in 1834 he transferred part of the former castle grounds including the pastorate to the Catholic community. In 1836 the pastorate was partially restored, but the building remained susceptible to moisture. In the 1850s the pastorate was demolished and rebuilt. To avoid the risk of further flooding, the property was raised by 60 cm and the building was then erected. In 1857 the new pastorate was finally completed. Only in 1922, long after the reconstruction of the parish church in 1875/1876 by the imperial master builder P. Cuypers, was the pastorate renovated again. In 1923 the church and pastorate got electric light.

Holy Walburga

The Holy. Walburga or Walburgis (ca. 710-779), daughter of King Richard the Pilgrim and sister of the saints Willibald and the Holy Winnebald , has a special significance for the village Netterden. She is its patroness . The village church, the rifle club and also the elementary school bear the name Walburgas. Walburga became a nun and from 748 missioned together with her brothers and Saint Boniface in what is now Germany. She became abbess of Heidenheim Monastery .
