The village of Varsseveld is located in the municipality of Oude IJsselstreek , in the eastern Netherlands, between Doetinchem and Winterswijk . It has 6,115 inhabitants.

The name was originally Wazovelde and was first mentioned in a document in 823, when a certain Gerowardus transferred some of his goods to the St. Maarten Church in Utrecht on February 7th . The name can be interpreted as the field of the vaarsen (young cows).

Church: de Grote of Laurentiuskerk
Monument in memory of the 46 men executed by the Germans in Varsseveld

Varsseveld was probably inhabited much earlier. In the Vennebulten near the village remains from the time of the reindeer hunters were found, as well as a coin of Antoninus Pius from Roman times . In the Middle Ages the Hessenweg ran by. Varsseveld has been a Calvinist enclave in the Catholic area since the Reformation (approx. 1580–90) . During the Second World War , the resistance against the German occupiers (e.g. by Mayor Boots) was important.

On March 2, 1945, a mass execution of 46 Dutch prisoners took place in Varsseveld. A week earlier, on March 25, three German soldiers broke into the Bark farm , allegedly looking for food. The farm served as a shelter for resistance fighters. The soldiers found evidence of their presence, so that they captured and hanged the three soldiers and a fourth man who was sitting in the car. The bodies of the killed German soldiers were placed in the car, which was driven in front of a tree and set on fire to simulate an accident. However, the German occupiers realized that it was a fictitious accident, but could not find the perpetrators. In retaliation, they took 46 men from Doetinchem prison who had been held there for minor offenses, took them to a field and executed them with machine guns.

Guuseum , named after the city's great son, Guus Hiddink

In the center of the village is the (Calvinist) Große or Laurenzkirche ( Laurentiuskerk , consecrated in 1556), and the old parish hall is nearby. There is the old Hofshuus farm and a volunteer-run windmill. With a large clothing store, Varsseveld also attracts many customers from Germany ( Bocholt is just under half an hour away by car). In 2002, Varsseveld became known in the Republic of Korea because it is the birthplace of Guus Hiddink , the then football coach of the local national team .

Varsseveld was the capital of the municipality of Wisch , which merged with the municipality of Gendringen on January 1, 2005 to form the new municipality of Oude IJsselstreek . Together with Gendringen, Varsseveld is one of the main towns in the new municipality.

There is a train station on the Winterswijk – Zevenaar – Arnheim line .
