Oude IJsselstreek is a municipality in the Dutch province of Gelderland . It was created on January 1, 2005 from the communities of Gendringen and Wisch . The new community has a total area of 137.95 km² and had 39,424 inhabitants on January 31, 2019, according to the CBS . It takes its name from the river Alte Issel ( German  Oude IJssel ), which flows through the municipality.

The community lies on the German border with North Rhine-Westphalia. The largest of 15 settlement centers is the village of Ulft, but the town hall is in Gendringen. Regionally known is the DRU complex , a former industrial facility that is now used for culture and education.

geography

It is a rather rural, originally Catholic area with a few industrial areas. The largest village is Ulft with ten thousand inhabitants. Further settlement areas are Silvolde and Terborg , all of which are on the Oude IJssel river, and the more distant, Protestant Varsseveld .

In the south, the community borders the German cities of Isselburg , Rees and Emmerich and thus both the Borken district and the Kleve district.

politics

The town hall is in Gendringen , parts of the city administration are in Varsseveld, the main town of the former municipality of Wisch. Since 2009, the meetings of the municipal council have usually taken place in the cultuurfabriek DRU .

The main issue in local politics is an appropriate response to expected demographic developments. As a rather rural and structurally weak municipality, Oude IJsselstreek has a hard time keeping young people and attracting workers. While some politicians advocate making the community more attractive through larger projects such as the conversion of the former DRU industrial plant, others reject this with a view to the community finances.

Culture

Sculptures from the Oerkracht , Silvolde / Terborg

The community is a member of the Ring of European Blacksmithing Cities , which has set itself the goal of promoting the regional diversity of the blacksmithing trade and metal design in the global unity of Europe at all levels.

The sculpture route Oerkracht (primal force) goes through the community . This name is a play on words . The Dutch word oer means: lawn iron ore , which was extracted and processed here until around 1900, but also corresponds to the German prefix ur- .

For over a hundred years, Ulft was one of the few places in the Netherlands where iron ore was extracted and processed. The area and several buildings of the DRU company were given new regulations in 2009. In addition to living space, the DRU complex is now used for cultural, social and educational offers. The most important part of the complex is called DRU Cultuurfabriek with the former Portiersgebouw (gatehouse) as the main building. The DRU-Cultuurfabriek replaces previous offers from the now demolished De Smeltkroes cultural center in the center of Ulft.
