Culemborg ( listen ? / I ; formerly also called Kuilenborg or Kuylenburgh ) is a town and municipality in the Dutch province of Gelderland . Audio file / audio sample

Location and economy

The city is located in the far west of the province, on the river Lek and on the car and railways between Utrecht and 's-Hertogenbosch . The Culemborg railway bridge on the Utrecht – Boxtel line crosses the Lek river here.

Culemborg has an important function in the service: it is the seat of the Centraal Boekhuis (Central Book House ). This very large distribution and logistics company , which, however, has the legal form of a non-profit foundation , has the almost complete monopoly of the distribution of books in the Dutch-speaking area (including Belgium ), and also manages the International Standard Book Numbers (ISBN) for books in Dutch .

There are also some important factories in the city that produce metal goods, bricks and furniture . Tourism is also not insignificant for the economy.

history

Culemborg was founded in the 12th century as a village on a dune on the south bank of the Lek. The conveniently located place developed into a city and free glory . A gentleman Jan (John) van Bosichem (probably: Beusichem) Culemborg granted on December 6, 1318 the town charter . Culemborg became a free town . This meant that people who were persecuted elsewhere could get the right to asylum in Culemborg , although the city was careful not to turn the town into a haven for criminals. Nevertheless, Culemborg had the reputation that debtors, even bankrupts, could continue to live there without being persecuted or hindered by their creditors.

In the 14th century, the then lord had a castle built in Culemborg. It was destroyed by French troops in 1672. In the early 16th century, Culemborg had a mistress Elisabeth, to whom the town owes its beautiful town hall and (from her inheritance) an orphanage . Emperor Charles V made Culemborg a county in 1520 . One of the counts was Floris van Pallandt (1537–1598), a Calvinist who, in 1566, was the first in the Netherlands to approve a non-Catholic service in the castle .

In 1619 Jan van Riebeeck , the founder of the Cape Colony in South Africa, was born in the town . The county came to the noble family Waldeck- Pyrmont in 1639, in 1714 to the House of Sachsen-Hildburghausen and in 1748 by purchase to the Duchy of Geldern . It was annexed to the Netherlands in 1798. Since then, the Dutch royal family has the right to the title of Count of Culemborg. King Willem-Alexander is now also Count of Culemborg.

The 19th century brought the city economic growth through the connection to the railway network and the settlement of cigar and furniture factories, and later, in 1926, of the “Centraal Boekhuis”. Culemborg is one of the places that had to be evacuated for a short time in 1995 because of the threat of a major flood in the rivers.

On February 14, 1991, a fireworks warehouse exploded near the city. Two people lost their lives and six were seriously injured. The damage to property was estimated at more than 50 million Dutch guilders (around € 25 million).

Attractions

The whole cityscape makes Culemborg with its old houses worth a day trip. Outstanding monuments are:

  • the town hall, built in 1533 by the Flemish architect Rombout Keldermans, now an exhibition and festival building;
  • the late Gothic church of St. Barbara ;
  • the Elisabeth Orphanage (1560), now a local history museum;
  • the eastern city gate Binnenpoort or Lanxmeerpoort (built in 1557).

The foundations of the former castle have been preserved in a park. The city has a marina on the Lek.

To the west of the village is Bunker 599 , an installation from a sawed-through bunker from 1940.

Trivia
