Bunker 599 is an installation in the area of the city of Culemborg in the Dutch province of Gelderland . It is a bunker cut into two parts with access to a small artificial lake.

bunker

Bunker 599 was part of the 700 bunker New Dutch Waterline , a line of defense that was intended to prevent German troops from advancing towards the fortress of Holland by flooding large areas between the Zuiderzee or IJsselmeer and Waal . It is of the Groepsschuilplaats Type P bunker type and was built in 1940 to provide protection for 13 soldiers. It lies at the foot of the Diefdijk, which forms the border between the provinces of Utrecht and Gelderland, about 150 meters south of Autobahn 2 from Utrecht to 's-Hertogenbosch .

installation

Bunker 599 is an installation by the Dutch landscape architecture firm RAAAF together with the Atelier de Lyon, which was completed in 2010. A wire saw was used to cut out a segment a good meter wide in the middle of the bunker in 40 days. A staircase leads down from the dike to the bunker and a concrete slab path runs between the bunker halves to a footbridge over an artificial lake, which is intended to remind of the planned flooding of the area. The bunker and jetty are freely accessible.

The installation received the Dutch Design Award - Best Exterior in 2011 and the AR Emerging Architecture Award in 2013 .

Bunker 599 has been a Rijksmonument since 2014 . It is also part of the nomination of the New Dutch Waterline as a UNESCO World Heritage Site .
