Elburg ( listen ? / I ) is a municipality in the Dutch province of Gelderland on the Veluwemeer with 23,086 inhabitants on January 31, 2019. Audio file / audio sample

places

The municipality includes the town of Elburg, the merged village of Oostendorp, the village of Doornspijk southwest of Elburg, 3.5 km away , the village of 't Harde , 6 km southeast of the city, and the small towns of Hoge Enk and Wessinge. The seat of the municipal administration is in Oostendorp.

Location and economy

Elburg lies between Nunspeet and Oldebroek on the Veluwemeer , over which a bridge leads to the province of Flevoland . The port is accessible for yachts and smaller cargo ships. Elburg's main line of business is tourism (see below: Sights). The village of 't Harde, which has a small train station on the Amersfoort - Zwolle railway line and is located on the A28 motorway ( Utrecht - Amersfoort - Zwolle), is home to artillery barracks and training grounds for the Dutch armed forces. Elburg has some industry, u. a. a machine and meat factory, one of the largest yacht service and winter storage companies in the Netherlands and a lot of small businesses. There are many farms (livestock) in the area.

history

Elburg was first mentioned in 796. Doornspijk was also mentioned in a document at that time. After a flood disaster (according to legend, but recently challenged), the city was rebuilt from scratch in the 14th century as a square fortress town with quarters in a checkerboard pattern. The master builder, Arent thoe Boecop, commissioned by the Duke of Geldern , moved into a large house in the new settlement in 1393, which is still in existence today. Elburg was famous for the fishing and grain trade and joined the Hanseatic League ; it even had its own wit at the annual Scandinavian fair . Competition from Holland after 1550 led to a decline in economic activity. In the 19th century, the city missed an opportunity for economic development when it was not possible to reach an agreement with landowners and railway companies about a railway connection. It was not until 1955 that tourism brought about a significant improvement. The modernization that had failed in the 19th century now turned out to be an advantage: the city looked exactly like it did in the Middle Ages in 1955 and has since presented itself to tourists in a state of careful renovation.

The very old, traditional and religiously conservative farming village of Doornspijk also had to be completely rebuilt in 1825 after a flood.

't Harde was first established in 1851 as an army base and after 1926 developed into an important settlement around the artillery training area there.

Attractions

Elburg is known in the Netherlands for its well-preserved medieval townscape. The local history museum is located in the historic Agnietenkloster (built in 1418). The museum shows u. a. the legacy of the sea hero Jan Hendrik van Kinsbergen (* 1735), who lived in Elburg for some time after retiring from active military service and loved the city very much. The layout of the former city fortifications can still be seen today (see picture). Only a small part of the city wall has survived; its torn part was built over with a tree-rich park by the well-known garden architect Mien Ruys , which surrounds the historic town center in a ring shape and is in turn surrounded by a broad moat. Near the fish gate (“vispoort”) parts of the underground casemates that were formerly used by the military can be viewed. The Nikolaikirche dates from the 15th century and is open to the public in summer. The old town, which is only about 20 hectares in size, with some of its narrow streets, offers many picturesque old houses from the 1400–1800 period. Small, colorful and often very old climbs, called “keitjesstoepen”, lie in front of the front doors.

At the Fischtor, in the approach to the Veluwemeer and not far from the bridge over the Veluwemeer, Elburg has marinas that are popular with water hikers; the Veluwemeer itself has a lot to offer water sports enthusiasts. The Veluwe forest begins at 't Harde . Parts of the military area are also sometimes open to hikers and cyclists. (When small red flags are hoisted, the area is closed for target practice.) The heather-covered hills, which are up to 60 meters high, offer some beautiful distant views.

There is a museum of Dutch artillery in 't Harde .
