A Witte was the time of the Hanseatic League , a branch of a Hanseatic city abroad for processing fish . In Pomerania, too, there are several places near the waters of strong herring migrations that used to be only temporarily inhabited during the herring fishing season ( Vitt , Vitte ).

Stettin , Lübeck , Stralsund and Rostock owned Witten on Falsterbo . Here were 15 ./ 16th century by Danish women herring gutted and salted.

The fish preserved in this way were then loaded onto their ships in herring barrels by the fish traders in the Hanseatic cities during the Skåne Fair and transported to the Hanseatic cities. There the herrings could also be sold inland as a fasting food at great profit .
