Location and economy
Berkelland is located in the Achterhoek in the east of the province of Gelderland. It borders among other things on Vreden ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) in Germany, and on the communities Haaksbergen and Lochem .
The Berkel River, which is now only navigable for canoes and other small boats, flows through the center of Borculo.
A trunk road, which was originally to be expanded to the N18 Doetinchem - Enschede from 2018 , is still causing many traffic obstructions in Eibergen. Ruurlo has a stop on the Zutphen - Winterswijk local railway . The other places can be reached by bus from Enschede, Deventer , Winterswijk or Zutphen.
The population lives largely from tourism , agriculture and industry. There is some meat industry and some small businesses in Borculo . In Rekken, on the German border east of Eibergen, there is the "Rekkense Inrichtingen", a group of institutions of the Ministry of Justice for juvenile or mentally ill offenders (now dissolved (2014); some buildings have been empty since 2015; it is being investigated whether they can be used as a home for asylum seekers). The villages have recently been increasingly populated by commuters who work in more distant cities.
The German-Dutch telecommunications battalion Communications and Information Systems (CIS) of the 1st German-Dutch Corps is also stationed in Eibergen , and there is also a branch of the Bundeswehr administrative center in the Netherlands. For this reason, many German soldier families also live in the vicinity of Eibergen.
history
The history of Borculo goes back to the 12th century when the Lords of Borculo ruled the area. In 1375 Borculo was granted town charter. The bishop of Münster , Christoph Bernhard von Galen , conquered the town and rule of Borculo in 1665 and 1672. In 1777, Prince Wilhelm V bought the rule of Borculo. Since then the ruling prince of the House of Orange has been "Lord of Borculo". The castle of the Lords of Borculo was completely demolished around 1760 and replaced by a small castle that only existed for 110 years. In 1925, a cyclone wreaked havoc on the city. A museum commemorates this episode in the city's history.
Eibergen was first mentioned in a document in 1188. It was a small town until 1795, with its own guilds , but no city court. The well-preserved medieval reformed church in the center of the village and the water mill in the Mallem community are worth seeing. Museum De Scheper is dedicated to interesting geological and local history.
At Neede , traces of prehistoric settlement of the funnel cup culture were excavated. Like Eibergen and Geesteren, Neede was first mentioned in 1188. The court at Neede was an important court of the Münster monastery over water. Only the tower remains of the medieval Church of St. Cecilia (today ref.). The beautifully restored noble house Kamp can be found near the village.
Attractions
Sights are nature and the landscape, which attract many nature lovers. There are many small natural areas, especially small forests, scattered across the municipality. The Zwillbrocker Venn, where even flamingos live, is just across the German border . The castle Ruurlo and the noble house De Kamp in Neede, with their parks, are also worth seeing. Eibergen, Geesteren and Ruurlo in particular have several old village churches. The old water mills, etc. a. Mallem near Eibergen, and Borculo, are suitable for a visit.
The (not yet merged) tourist offices in Eibergen, Neede, Ruurlo and Borculo publish information sheets on bike tours and hikes. The Borculo Museum not only commemorates the 1925 storm, it also has a very remarkable collection of old fire fighting vehicles and equipment.
Ruurlo Castle has served as a museum since 2017, as a "branch" of the MORE Museum in Gorssel, Lochem municipality . It shows paintings by Carel Willink .
