Savoy Grand is an English slowcore band from Nottingham . It plays a very pared-down and slowed-down mix of indie rock and folk and is also associated with post rock and alternative country .
style
In terms of style, Savoy Grand is related to the American rock minimalists from Low , and comparisons to Talk Talk or their singer Mark Hollis , to Mogwai , Codeine , the Red House Painters or Slint are also frequently mentioned. The main hallmark of the band is the slowing down of their music. This is mostly characterized by silence, repetition and minimalism, but develops a life of its own in the course of the songs, which often last more than five minutes, through minimal changes in the dynamics.
Band history
Savoy Grand was founded in the late 1990s by Graham Langley, who posted an advertisement looking for band members. A first single was released in 1999 on the small label Pickled Egg . In the same year the English New Musical Express declared Savoy Grand next to Coldplay as one of the most hopeful newcomers of the year. In 2000, Glitterhouse released Dirty Pillows as a compilation of the first EP and the debut single, a first album in Germany , Burn the Furniture followed in 2002 and People and What They Want in 2005 . Just like the EPs that were released in between, the albums received critical praise. Since its inception, Savoy Grand has seen several band changes. The band dormant between 2002 and 2004 while Langley worked on a solo project called The Hearse of the Year Show .
Despite the mostly calm music, Savoy Grand have been considered Gods of Thunder since an appearance at the Orange Blossom Special Festival in Beverungen in 2001 . In 2002 they played as a short-term replacement for Sigur Rós as the headliner of the "Haldern Pop" festival . In 2005 the online magazine gaesteliste.de described them as "currently the most consistent and typical representative of slowcore" .
