Elst has a train station on the Zwolle - Arnhem - Nijmegen - 's-Hertogenbosch - Breda line and is the terminus of the Utrecht - Tiel - Elst local railway .

In the villages, especially in Elst, there are many commuters who work in Arnhem or Nijmegen. Agriculture and horticulture and fruit growing (apples) are important. There is a fruit auction in Elst . Elst has factories for chemical pesticides and confectionery as well as large storage rooms in supermarkets and drug stores . The community also has a lot of small businesses.

history

The area of the municipality is the "insula Batavorum", where the Batavians lived in pre-Christian times . They built a temple on the spot where the “Great Church” (St. Martini) of Elst is now, which was discovered in 1945 during archaeological excavations. After the failure of the Batavian revolt against the Romans in 69 or 70 AD, a new temple was built there. This was 28 × 23 meters; the cella measured 15 × 13 meters. To which deity the temple was dedicated is still unknown. The Roman influence in the architectural style of the temple suggests that the new building came about in collaboration between Batavian nobles and Romans. The temple was probably in use until around 400 AD. A model of the building was placed in the Great Church. This is one of the most important ancient remains in the Netherlands. In 2002, traces of a second Roman temple were discovered about 600 meters away. A Roman fort is suspected in the villages of Driel and Randwijk.

The first church was built here in the 8th century, which was finally replaced by today's late Gothic church in the 15th century . The church can only be visited sporadically by appointment for groups; Tours are only in Dutch. Traces of Germanic settlements have also been found in the other villages of Overbetuwe. a. the Batavians, the Chamaven and the Saxons .

The village of Driel is mentioned in a document as early as 996; the village of Heteren 1232. In the Middle Ages they were administered by "ambtmannen", officials. These often noble lords were also dikemakers and judges of the region. An “Ambtmanshuis” is still in Elst. To this day these have remained quiet farming villages that have suffered many flood disasters in the course of their long history. The area suffered badly during World War II ; Driel, Heteren and Elst were badly damaged in Operation Market Garden in September 1944. A small war museum in Heteren still reminds of this. The village of Zetten has always been a center for children's and nursing homes. There is a small nursing museum (NMVV) there.
