The fort Overbetuwe-Randwijk is a loud Willem JH Willems suspected to uncertainties Roman auxiliary fort of the Lower Germanic Limes . The former military camp was probably in the area of Randwijk , a village in the municipality of Overbetuwe in the Dutch province of Gelderland .

Location and fort hypothesis

Randwijk in the course of the Lower Germanic Limes

Due to the relatively large distance between the military camps in Driel and Carvo / Kesteren and the strategic importance of the area immediately around Randwijk, another fort is suspected there. The strategic importance arose from the fact that the Limesstrasse was crossed there by a road connection running in a south-north direction. This road ran from Herveld via Zetten to Randwijk, crossed the Rhine at Wageningen - Lexkesveer and continued from there to the area around Ede and possibly to the Ermelo marching camp . Another, albeit weak, indication is provided by the fact that places with the name suffix -wijk are among the oldest places in the Netherlands.

Finds and Findings

The location of the fort has not been localized to this day, only in the immediate vicinity of the church of Randwijk could Roman cultural layers be identified. No further findings are known; the bearing appears to be completely eroded. The finds of military provenance from and around Randwijk, which corroborate the fort hypothesis, include one or two brick stamps, a handful of shards and possibly secondary Roman building material from the opposite bank of the Rhine, above all a pugio , a Roman military dagger .
