Willem JH Willems

Willem JH Willems (born July 19, 1950 in Venlo - Blerick , † December 13, 2014 in Amersfoort ) was a Dutch archaeologist . His scientific focus was the preservation of monuments and provincial Roman archeology .

Career

Willem Willems studied archeology and anthropology at the University of Amsterdam and the University of Michigan and received his doctorate in Amsterdam in 1986. In 1987 he became professor of Roman provincial archeology at the University of Leiden . From 1989 to 1999 he was the director of the Dutch Reich Service for Ground Monument Preservation (ROB, today Reich Service for the Cultural Heritage ("Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed")) and a Dutch state archaeologist. From 1999 to 2001 he was director for archaeological resource management at the Dutch Ministry of Culture, from 2001 to 2006 chief inspector for archeology at the Reich Service for the Cultural Heritage. From 1990 he was Vice-President and from 2008 Co-President of the International Scientific Committee on Archaeological Heritage Management (ICAHM) , from 1998 to 2003 he was President of the European Association of Archaeologists (EAA), and in 1999 founding President of the Europae Archaeologiae Consilium . Since 2006 he has also represented the subject of international archaeological resource management at the University of Leiden and was dean of the archaeological faculty at the University of Leiden until his retirement in 2013.

Willem Willems was a member of the German Archaeological Institute and the Society of Antiquaries of London . He was the bearer of the Order of the Dutch Lion .
