Location and economy

Westervoort is located on the Nederrijn , where the IJssel branches off to the northeast, directly east of the IJssel. The bridge at Westervoort connects the village with its western neighbor, the city of Arnhem . Westervoort has an industrial park with mostly small businesses. The village is a suburb of Arnhem, where most of the working people have their jobs.

From 1856 to 1936 the village had a train station on the Oberhausen – Arnhem railway line . In 2011 the new Westervoort station was opened. Drivers can get to Westervoort via exit no. 27 of the A12 motorway (Arnheim – Oberhausen). The eastern neighbor of Westervoort is Duiven , where the municipal archives are also located.

history

The place Westervoort was mentioned for the first time in 726. Saint Werenfried is said to have built a church here in the 8th century and also died in Westervoort. Today's village church, the only significant sight in the community, dates from around 1150–1500, and was lovingly restored after war damage from the Second World War . On May 10, 1940, when the German invasion of the Netherlands began during World War II , Dutch armed forces managed to delay the deployment of the German Wehrmacht in Westervoort a little by blowing up the IJssel Bridge. This bridge has been the main artery of the village since 1855 (railroad) and 1894 (traffic route). During Operation Market Garden in the autumn of 1944, Westervoort suffered further war damage. The IJssel Bridge was open to traffic again in 1946. After around 1980, the fields and meadows of the place, which until then mainly lived from agriculture, were converted into new residential areas for commuters from Arnhem.
