Betuwe [ ˈbeːtywə ] is a stretch of land in the Dutch province of Gelderland . It is bordered in the north by the arm of the Rhine flowing in an east-west direction , the Nederrijn (Lower Rhine), in the lower reaches of the Lek and in the south by the Meuse . At the same time, the Waal flows through the Betuwe, whose clay soils are among the most fertile in Europe. Therefore there is a lot of fruit and vegetable growing here . Another source of income is cycling and hiking tourism. The name "Betuwe" is derived from the Batavern .

It is believed that the surname of the composer Ludwig van Beethoven is derived from this landscape.

Cities

The communes of Overbetuwe , created in 2001 through merger, took up the name of the area. The city of Arnhem is assigned to the Veluwe and / or the Betuwe.

The Betuweroute , a railway line running through the Betuwe for goods traffic from the port of Rotterdam to the German-Dutch border near Emmerich am Rhein, is named after this area. history

During the Viking raids into the Rhineland in 885, the Viking leaders Gottfried and Sigfried bei Herwen were ambushed by the Frankish military leader Heinrich von Babenberg and murdered by the Frisian aristocrats. Their followers were then completely wiped out by the Franks in the Betuwe.
