Teisterbant

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Teisterbant (also Teisterband , Testerbant or Testreband ) is a historical territory in today's Netherlands .

The first part of the name, “teister” may come from an old Germanic or Celtic word for “right” and is related to Latin : dexter = right.

location

It enclosed the areas that were located between Lek and the Meuse . In an east-west direction it reached from the Gau Betuwe to presumably the confluence of the rivers Lek, Waal and Maas in the great delta, which then had a completely different shape than today. The name of the territory can no longer be found on the maps today. Today's Nieder-Betuwe (the southern part of the province of Gelderland ) was part of the area, the capital was Tiel , cities like Vianen , Buren , Culemborg , Batenburg , Malsen ( Geldermalsen ?) Are named .

history

The Counts of Teisterbant were hereditary chamberlains of the Bishop of Utrecht and had their land as a fief from him. After Count Dietrich von Kleve married Countess Ida von Teisterbant in 741, Karl Martell entrusted him with the county of Teisterbant. In 800, Count Baldwin von Kleve entrusted his son Robert († 806) with the county of Teisterbant. Of Robert's sons, Ludwig, the eldest, continued the Teisterbant line, Robert resided at Heusden and Theodericus at Altena. Ludwig's great-grandson, Ansfried , became Bishop of Utrecht (995 to 1010) and in 994 gave his land partly to his relatives and partly to Utrecht Monastery. In 1290, Count Dietrich von Kleve gave the fiefs of Heusden and Altena to Count Floris V of Holland .

Later this fief came from the Count of Holland to William the Bavaria , Count of Holland, so that the county was finally divided and partly Holland, partly the Duchy of Geldern and partly the Utrecht Monastery.
