Location of Dinxperlo in the municipality of Aalten |
Dinxperlo is a place in the east of the Netherlands . It belongs to the municipality of Aalten in the province of Gelderland and lies on the border with the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia .
Location and limit
Dinxperlo is the direct neighbor of the German village Suderwick , which belongs to the city of Bocholt .
It has 7058 inhabitants and was a quiet farming village in the Bredevoort dominion until 1811 . After that, Dinxperlo was an independent municipality until 2004. With the municipality reform on January 1, 2005, the municipality of Dinxperlo was dissolved and has been part of the municipality of Aalten ever since.
The border between Suderwick and Dinxperlo runs in the middle of the village street, which is called Hellweg in German and Heelweg in Dutch . In the further course of the road towards the Dutch industrial park de Rietstap, the German side of the road is called Brückendeich , in Dutch it is the Anholtse Weg . After the abolition of border controls, the different construction methods of the houses can be used to identify in which place and thus in which country you are currently. Part of the border is marked with a yellow line.
The common European aspect is also emphasized by the fact that Dinxperlo owns the first German-Dutch police station. This is located near the town hall ( Raadhuis ) on the Dutch side. Similar to Eurode near Herzogenrath , it is manned by a Dutch and a German civil servant (from Bocholt ). A German-Dutch retirement home is located directly on the border , the two parts of which are connected by a bridge over the He (e) lweg. The residents' signs with bilingual texts also make the relationship understandable.
The city friendship founded in 1978 with the town of Neuenrade in the Sauerland was converted into a town twinning in 1984 .
Attractions
In the industrial area of Dinxperlo you can visit the smallest church in the Netherlands ( De Rietstap ) on a road that runs along the national border . The notary Theodore Marie Theophille te Rietstap had inherited the property and a larger amount from his uncle with the proviso that a church should be built there. In order to save money, he made the church with a length of 6.40 m and a width of 4.50 m and a five-meter "high" tower turn out to be very small. Art exhibitions can be seen there at times.
One attraction of Dinxperlos is the market every Friday afternoon and evening, which is particularly popular with Bocholtern and short vacationers from the Ruhr area .
You can find out more about the history of the border region and smuggling in the Grenzlandmuseum on the market square. It is run by volunteers from a working group of the home association.
