Suderwick (Dutch Zuiderwijk ) is a district of Bocholt in North Rhine-Westphalia , but represents a spatially separated place. It borders directly on the Dutch Dinxperlo .

At Suderwick, 13 kilometers from the city center, not only the city limits of Bocholt run , but also the state border between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Netherlands . On the Dutch side in the north, the larger Dinxperlo (municipality of Aalten ) borders directly on Suderwick and apparently forms a coherent place with it.

Suderwick also borders the Bocholt districts of Spork and Liedern as well as Bocholt's neighboring town of Isselburg . However, clear boundaries are not visible here, as the extensive area is primarily characterized by agriculture.

history

The first families were there in 1498/99 in Suderwick, which were distributed over ten to twelve farms and reached a total population of around 56 people. At that time there were no clergy or noble households. Suderwick grew slightly in the following centuries, but exact figures are only available from Dinxperlo in the Netherlands. Around 1,700 people lived here in 1815, four of whom were Jewish families.

In 1909 the first sports club was founded in Suderwick with the name Viktoria Suderwick, which has been running the addition Grenzlandsportverein (GSV) since the 1960s. The club's full name is now Grenzlandsportverein Viktoria 09 Suderwick eV Today the club has around 800 members and maintains a football, tennis, table tennis and gymnastics department.

After the Second World War, the effects on Suderwick were devastating. As part of the Dutch annexation plans , Suderwick-West (49 ha) had to be ceded to the Netherlands on April 23, 1949, while the eastern part remained German. It was not until August 1, 1963 that the western part was returned to the Federal Republic of Germany by means of a state treaty (border treaty of April 8, 1960 between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Kingdom of the Netherlands). At that time about 1300 people lived in Suderwick, which at that time still belonged to the Liedern-Werth office . On January 1, 1975, Suderwick was incorporated into a district of Bocholt. The village structures were retained. Today around 1900 people live in the village, with the number of Dutch residents continuing to rise.

Transport links

The Dinxperloer Strasse runs through Suderwick. Bocholt and Isselburg can be reached quickly. The A3 has the junction Hamminkeln / Bocholt or Rees / Isselburg / Bocholt. Due to the direct proximity to Dinxperlo, the border crossing is possible in numerous places. The C7 line of Stadtbus Bocholt GmbH connects Dinxperlo with the bus meeting point in Bocholt and also runs through Suderwick.

German-Dutch peculiarities

Building wing over Heelweg (left) or Hellweg (right sidewalk)

The no longer visible border does not suggest that Suderwick and Dinxperlo are two places. The border runs right on the curb of a street called Hellweg on the German side and Heelweg on the Dutch side . There is a German-Dutch police station in Dinxperlo, each manned by an officer from the Bocholt police station and a colleague from the Dutch police .

The first German-Dutch nursing home for the elderly exists on Hellweg / Heelweg . Two facilities on either side of the border are connected by a glass wing over the street.

The people of Dinxperlo drink water from Germany, but the wastewater from the Suderwick households is treated in the Dinxperlo sewage treatment plant. German children can attend the basic school in Dinxperlo.
