history

Anholt moated castle

In 1169 a lord of Anholt was named in the feudal book of the bishop of Utrecht . The first verifiable lord of Anholt was Stephan I von Sulen from 1234 to 1249. Anholt developed into an imperial rule with sovereign rights. On May 25, 1347, Stephan IV von Sulen (1313 to 1347) granted the settlement around Anholt Castle town charter. City and castle were closely linked. The Lords of Anholt were demonstrably: 1234 to 1402 von Sulen, 1402 to 1641 the Counts of Bronckhorst-Batenburg, since 1641 the Princes of Salm (1743 of Salm-Salm).

Anholt was expanded into a fortress. Three city gates, the city wall, the outer moat, the wall and the inner moat secured the city in troubled times. The last days of the war in 1945 did not leave much of the former impression of a small castle and residence town. Some evidence of Anholt's past can still be seen, including the historic town hall from 1567, Wall and Graben (15th century), ice cellar, part of the former city fortifications , noble houses and the Anholt moated castle , still privately owned by the princes of Salm -Salm.

Isselburg was first mentioned around 1300 as "Yselberge". A castle may have existed as early as the 14th century. It was expanded by the Count of Kleve around 1410 and then called "Neyenborg". In 1441, Duke Adolf II of Kleve granted the settlement founded in what is now the city area with city rights. In 1570 the city accepted Luther's teachings , except for one family. With the Duchy of Cleves Isselburg came to Brandenburg in 1609 . In 1624, 1669 and 1697 the town fell victim to fires. The Reformed community, established in the 17th century, built its churches in 1689, the Catholics in 1785. The Minerva ironworks founded in 1794 to smelt the lawn iron ore in the Issel lowlands ( Isselburger Hütte since 1874 ) brought about good economic development and population growth (1830: 660, 1867: 1140 , 1900: 2235 inhabitants). The plant, today only an iron foundry, has remained an important economic factor up to the present day. Remnants of the old city wall and the only surviving defensive tower at the Catholic Church bear witness to the size of the castle that the Lords of Kleve built as the easternmost outpost of their sphere of influence. The tower, in which a guardroom from the 15th century has been preserved almost in its original form, has recently been reopened for tours.

Since the school reorganization in 1968 there was a school association between Anholt, Isselburg and Werth.

Territorial reform

The former town of Isselburg belonged to the Rees district (seat in Wesel ) and was established on January 1, 1975 in the course of the second reorganization program in North Rhine-Westphalia with the municipalities or cities of Anholt , Heelden, Herzebocholt, Vehlingen, Werth and part of the municipality of Wertherbruch (now: City of Hamminkeln ) merged and assigned to the Borken district .

Coat of arms, flag, seal

"The city of Isselburg was granted the right to use a coat of arms, a flag, a banner and an official seal with a certificate from the District President of Münster dated July 20, 1976." (See § 2 of the main statutes of the city of Isselburg)

Description of the coat of arms

"In red over a tinned silver (white) wall, a crowned white building with a pointed roof and lantern, the roof covered by two silver (white) wall anchors."

meaning

In the coat of arms of the new town of Isselburg, the house and wall were taken from the Isselburg coat of arms from 1912, the two wall anchors and the colors from the coat of arms of Anholt. The coat of arms of the town of Isselburg, which received town charter from the Counts of Kleve in 1441, goes back to a seal known since 1505 - probably the aldermen; According to local tradition, the house is supposed to represent the parish hall. The Lords of Zuylen granted Anholt town charter in 1349. Your coat of arms appeared for the first time in 1433 - reduced by a wall anchor - in the seal of the city. The former titular town of Werth, which today belongs to the town of Isselburg, also had a (red) wall anchor in its coat of arms.

Description of the flag

"From red to white (to red) in a ratio of 1: 3: 1, striped lengthways (this means cross-striped), in the middle of the middle strip the city's coat of arms."

Description of the banner

"From red to white (to red) in a ratio of 1: 3: 1, the city's heraldic shield is in the upper half of the middle strip."

Description of the official seal

"The seal shows the city's coat of arms and has the inscription STADT ISSELBURG in capital letters."

Culture and sights

The most outstanding building in the city is the moated castle Burg Anholt , a baroque residence which today includes a museum and a hotel in addition to the living quarters of the Salm-Salm princely family .

Other sights include, on the one hand, the old town center of Isselburg with the historic fortified tower from the 15th century and the town hall from the 16th century, and on the other hand the town center of Werth with the medieval town hall and windmill . Evangelical church community Isselburg

The founding date of the Lutheran congregation Isselburg is December 3, 1570. At the instigation of the chaplain Gert Müller and the then mayor J. Wingtes, almost all citizens of the small town with around 250 inhabitants converted to the Lutheran faith. With the separation from the mother parish in Millingen, the chapel dedicated to Bartholomäus also became a Lutheran church.

A very small Reformed community emerged in 1648. The Reformed later also had their own school and parsonage.

In 1817, the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III. the church union between Reformed and Lutherans. It was not until 1828 that the way for this union was cleared in Isselburg. The old Lutheran rectory was sold. The house of prayer of the Reformed community was converted into a rectory. So there was now only one parsonage and one church in the newly established Evangelical parish in Isselburg.

Today , about 1250 parishioners from the districts of Isselburg, Heelden and Vehlingen belong to the Evangelical parish of Isselburg, which belongs to the parish of Wesel and thus to the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland .
