The Bocholt station is now the northern terminus of Bocholt train . It is located about 500 meters southeast of the city center of Bocholt in North Rhine-Westphalia near the border with the Netherlands and was once an important rail hub.

history

The station was opened on July 1, 1878 by the Cologne-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft together with the Bocholter Bahn , a branch of their "Holland route" beginning in Wesel .

A good two years later, on August 25, 1880, the Dutch-Westphalian Railway Company put the Winterswijk – Bocholt railway into operation and the station became a through station .

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Prussian State Railways began building the Baumberbahn from Empel to Münster. With the inauguration of the first section on August 1, 1901, a separation station was built in Bocholt , and exactly one year later, when the second section to Borken went into operation, it even became a crossing station .

After the First World War, through traffic to Winterswijk was stopped. The remaining passenger traffic on this route to Barlo came to an end around 1952, freight traffic was discontinued in 1989.

Passenger traffic on the Baumberbahn ended in 1974, goods traffic in the direction of Empel-Rees ended in 1984, the section of the route is still preserved as a siding for the city of Bocholt as far as Mussum. Freight traffic to the north (Rhedebrügge) ended in 1991. Since then, Bocholt has been a terminus again.

In the mid-1990s, the city of Bocholt bought a class 628 multiple unit and donated it to Deutsche Bahn AG , which at the time carried out passenger traffic on the line to Wesel in order to ensure the continued existence of the line.

Former reception building

The received station building was erected in 1904. Today it houses the city library and the cityscape.

To the south of the former reception building stood the goods handling of the Bocholt train station, where the trains were loaded with goods on a loading platform and directed towards the Ruhr area.

In the mid-1990s, the passenger station was completely rebuilt, one island platform was demolished and the other was converted into a combined platform . At the same time, a new, smaller station building was erected, which directly merges into the remaining platform.

There used to be a locomotive shed with a turntable at the station, where steam locomotives were located.

Regional traffic

The Bocholter on the platform and platform 3

In local rail passenger transport , the course book route 421 is served by the regional express RE 19a Der Bocholter . Until the timetable change on December 15, 2019, the line was called RB32. This runs every hour every day.

Abellio Rail NRW operates the Bocholter as a shuttle train operation between Bocholt and Wesel. There is a connection to the regional express lines Rhein-Express ( RE 5 ) and Rhein-IJssel-Express (RE 19) as well as Monday to Friday to the regional express line Wupper-Lippe-Express (RE 49).

2016 have been used for Dec. diesel railcar of the type Alstom Coradia LINT h for speeds up to 120 km /.

Since the timetable change in December 2017, the former RB 32 line has run every hour on Sundays. Line RB 32 was renamed RE19a at the 2019 timetable change, as line number RB32 was newly assigned to the Rhein-Emscher-Bahn from Duisburg via Oberhausen and Gelsenkirchen to Dortmund. The line to Wesel is to be modernized and electrified by the end of 2021 so that the part of the "Rhein-IJssel-Express" (RE 19) currently remaining in Wesel can take over the journeys of the RE 19a. Originally, the wing was supposed to start at the end of 2019, but that failed because the electrification had not yet been completed. By winging the RE 19 and connecting it, the cities of Bocholt and Hamminkeln are connected to the Ruhr area quickly and without changing for the first time.

future

An extensive renovation of the station is to take place in the future. The old pedestrian underpass is to be filled in and unused track lengths and platform lengths are to be removed. It is intended to dismantle old track systems and to create a new track for night train parking. All of this is to happen up to the electrification of the Wesel – Bocholt railway line. In addition, as part of the electrification of the Wesel – Bocholt railway line, the station area will be equipped with an overhead line. There is also the question of reactivating the Empel-Rees – Münster railway section from Bocholt. That would require another major renovation. However, the implementation of this measure is initially questionable: In January 2020, the NWL published the results of a feasibility study that examined the re-establishment of local rail transport in the Bocholt - Borken - Münster axis with regard to its economic benefits in various planned cases. Different implementation variants were examined. The planned case of an extension of the RE 19 line from Düsseldorf via Bocholt to Rhede achieved the highest benefit-cost factor of 0.94, but a value of at least 1 would be necessary. Economic benefits are high, forecast investment costs of over 440 million Euro versus. Currently, the costs of a route without overpasses and underpasses are being calculated in order to allow level crossings at some points with special permits.

Tariff

In local public transport , the tariff of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) has been in effect since January 1, 2012, and the NRW tariff across all tariff areas . However, the city bus traffic runs under the tariff of the Zweckverband Nahverkehr Westfalen-Lippe .
