The Rhein-Emscher-Express is a regional express line in North Rhine-Westphalia from Hamm via Dortmund , Gelsenkirchen and Duisburg to Düsseldorf .

In these stations, it is linked to the other lines of local rail passenger transport in North Rhine-Westphalia and offers connections to long-distance passenger rail transport .

history

The regional express RE 3 Rhein-Emscher-Express has been running since the introduction of the integral regular-service timetable ( NRW-Takt ) in 1998. It initially drove from Hamm via Dortmund, Gelsenkirchen, Duisburg and Krefeld to Mönchengladbach. With the timetable change in December 2002, the Rhein-Emscher-Express gave its train run from Duisburg to Mönchengladbach to the Rhein-Haard-Express (RE 2), which was extended from Essen to Duisburg for this purpose, and has been running to Düsseldorf since then. This means that the Rhein-Emscher-Express uses the main line of the Cologne-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft that has existed since 1846/47 on the entire line .

On the occasion of the soccer world championship 2006 a WM-RE3 was set up as a special amplifier line, which extended from Dortmund via Gelsenkirchen and Düsseldorf via Neuss and Dormagen to Cologne.

On December 15, 2019, a new regional train line RB 32 Rhein-Emscher-Bahn was added to the timetable offer in connection with the change in the S-Bahn Rhein-Ruhr service , which runs parallel to RE 3 between Dortmund and Duisburg , but stops between Gelsenkirchen and Oberhausen served by the previous S-Bahn line S 2. In addition, the Emscher-Niederrhein-Bahn (RB 35) to Mönchengladbach is now on its way to Mönchengladbach on weekdays except Saturdays . Assuming that the electrification of the Wesel – Bocholt railway line could be completed in 2019 and that Der Bocholter could thus be integrated into the Rhein-IJssel-Express (RE 19), the line number RB 32 had already been reassigned in advance. The previous RB 32 now bears the line number RE 19a - as a future part of the RE 19 train.

Train run

The Rhein-Emscher-Express now runs a total of three railway lines:

The Rhein-Emscher-Express is now the only train line that runs continuously and exclusively on the major part of the main route of the Cologne-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft .

Offer

Eurobahn ET 7.10 as RE3 to Hamm (Westphalia) in Duisburg Hbf

The RE 3 runs every hour from Hamm (Westf) to Düsseldorf. A large section of it runs parallel to S-Bahn lines and has partly taken on the character of a fast S-Bahn or rapid transit system and is used accordingly by passengers. Between Duisburg and Gelsenkirchen, the RB 32 (see above) and RB 35 ( Emscher-Niederrhein-Bahn ), which run parallel to the RE 3, complement the offer at approximately 20-minute intervals.

Local rail passenger transport was operated by DB Regio NRW until December 12, 2009 , which has been using class 425 electric multiple units in double traction since the 2008 winter timetable . Before that, push-pull trains made up of five converted local transport cars or four double-decker cars with a class 111 electric locomotive ran on the line .

The average speed is only 63 km / h. The reason for this is u. a. the dense sequence of stops between Dortmund and Hamm. Since December 9, 2009, electric multiple units of the type Stadler FLIRT from Keolis GmbH & Co KG ( eurobahn ) have been used on this line . To this end, four four-part and fourteen five-part FLIRTs are leased from Angel Trains Europe .

The Federal Railway Authority, which is responsible for the approval of railway vehicles in Germany, delayed the approval of the 14 five-part FLIRT multiple units. For this reason, the Eurobahn started operations only with an emergency schedule.

In the period from December 13, 2009 to December 11, 2010, the RE 3 (on the occasion of RUHR.2010 - European Capital of Culture ) also served the Essen Zollverein Nord stop (formerly Essen-Katernberg Süd ) to ensure fast arrival and departure To enable departure to the Zollverein World Heritage Site . On January 7, 2010 the stop was officially renamed Essen Zollverein Nord. Since the timetable change in December 2010, this line has passed through the station again without stopping, but the changed name continues to apply.

Transport authority

Two special purpose associations , the Zweckverband Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) and the Zweckverband SPNV Ruhr-Lippe (ZRL) are involved in the order. The line was put out to tender together with the Maas-Wupper-Express when the timetable changed on December 13, 2009 . Rhenus Keolis GmbH won the business until December 2025 . In addition to Abellio Rail NRW GmbH, Nedbahnen Deutschland , a subsidiary of Dutch Railways and again DB Regio NRW GmbH and other railway companies, had applied .

future

The RE 3 is expected to be replaced by the RRX  3 in 2030 , which will then take over from the previous train route of the RE 3 and an additional extension via Dormagen and Cologne to Cologne / Bonn Airport and via Lünen to Münster .

For the period from the end of the previous tender in December 2025 until the switch to RRX operation, the line will be tendered again on the current route.
