The Rhein-IJssel-Express ( RE 19 ) is an hourly cross-border regional express line belonging to the Lower Rhine network in North Rhine-Westphalia and the Dutch province of Gelderland . It connects Düsseldorf on the Rhine , Oberhausen and Emmerich with Arnheim on the IJssel .
The Der Bocholter line (RE 19a) connects Wesel with Bocholt . After the electrification of the Wesel – Bocholt railway line , the line should be integrated into the RE 19 and winged in Wesel to Bocholt , creating a continuous line from Düsseldorf to Bocholt. Due to delays in the infrastructure expansion of the railway line, the implementation of the wing has been postponed indefinitely.
The lines are operated by Abellio Rail NRW on behalf of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) .
With the Maas-Wupper-Express , LIMAX (Liège-Maastricht-Aachen-Express) and the euregioAIXpress there are three further international regional expresses in North Rhine-Westphalia.
history
Line RE 19 was introduced with the timetable change on April 6, 2017. Before that, the regional train line Der Weseler (formerly RB 35), which was created in 1998 with the introduction of the NRW cycle , ran on the Oberhausen – Arnhem railway line . The Weseler connected Duisburg and Wesel until December 2016 and only operated in the rush hour (HVZ) in the direction of load to Emmerich or Düsseldorf or Cologne. The line was served with locomotives of the class 425/426 and (mostly in the high season) with locomotive-hauled trains with n-wagons from DB Regio AG, Region NRW .
When the contract between DB Regio AG, Region NRW and VRR expired in December 2016 , the entire right-hand Lower Rhine network was put out to tender. A cross-border local transport line was also planned. Abellio Rail NRW won the tender for the Niederrhein network and thus also the international route. The RE 19 line started operating with the timetable change on December 11, 2016 - but initially only on the section from Emmerich to Düsseldorf. The Rhein-IJssel-Express has only been running from Emmerich via Zevenaar to Arnhem since April 6, 2017 . In Arnhem connections are made to the national InterCity network of the Netherlands Railways and regional Sprinter - and Stoptrein connections. Between Zevenaar and Arnheim, the RE 19 complements the Dutch stop-off lines Arnheim – Doetinchem - Winterswijk and Arnheim – Doetinchem.
Since the end of the express train connections between Amsterdam and Cologne in the 1980s, there has been no cross-border local traffic on the Oberhausen – Arnhem railway line . There were only bus lines and one Intercity Express line. Only from December 2005 to June 2006 did the Dutch public transport company Syntus operate the regional train line Der Arnheimer (formerly RB 34) between Emmerich and Arnheim for test purposes .
Another component of the tender for December 2016 was the operation of the non-electrified Wesel – Bocholt railway line. The regional train line Der Bocholter (formerly RB 32) from Wesel to Bocholt was introduced on this route . Assuming that the electrification of the railway line will be completed by December 2019 and that the RE 19 line in Wesel will therefore be able to wing, line number RB 32 was assigned to the Rhein-Emscher-Bahn line in the run-up to the 2019 timetable change , with which the lines The Bocholter had to be assigned a new line number. Since then, the line has had the line identifier RE 19a originally intended for the introduction of the wing, although the RE 19 has not yet been able to be winged.
offer
The lines run daily between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. Together with the Rhein-Express (RE 5 (RRX)) and the Wupper-Lippe-Express (RE 49), every 20 minutes on the Wesel and Oberhausen section is offered from Monday to Friday, and every half hour on Saturdays and Sundays. On the section of Wesel and Dusseldorf from half hour is Monday to Friday together with the Rhein-Express offered also come 6-9 pm and 16-18 hours Additional relief trains are used.
vehicles
Stadler Flirt 3 vehicles are used on the RE 19 line . Abellio acquired a total of 21 railcars of this type for the RE 19, RE 19a and RB 35 lines . Seven of these railcars are multi-system vehicles , which are used for the route sections Düsseldorf – Elten (15 kV 16.7 Hz ~ ), Elten – Zevenaar (transition to the Betuweroute ) (25 kV 50 Hz ~) and Zevenaar – Arnhem (1.5 kV = ) are needed.
On the RE 19a line, diesel-powered Alstom Coradia LINT vehicles will be used until the rail line is electrified .
For the maintenance of the vehicles, the operator has a workshop in the immediate vicinity of Duisburg Central Station .
Train run
The Regional Express lines operate on the following rail routes:
RE 19:
- Cologne – Duisburg railway from Düsseldorf to Duisburg
- Duisburg – Dortmund railway line from Duisburg to Oberhausen
- Railway line Oberhausen – Arnhem over the entire length
RE 19a:
- Railway line Wesel – Bocholt over the entire length
- Empel-Rees-Münster railway line in Bocholt station
Hellweg Express
In the early days of the NRW cycle, there was already a regional express line from 1998 to 2002 , which was called RE 19. This connection operated by DB Regio NRW led from Dortmund via Unna to Warburg and was replaced by the RB 59 Hellweg Bahn and RB 89 when the timetable changed on December 15, 2002 .
