geography

Spatial location

The district of Feldmark - colloquially called the Feldmark - is located north of Wesel city center between Bocholter and Emmericher Strasse in the north and east, the port railway in the south and the Rheinaue Park in the Weseler Aue in the west. Other neighboring districts are Blumenkamp in the north, Lackhausen in the east, Schepersfeld in the south-east and Flüren in the north-west . There is only a clear spatial separation to corridors, whereas the Feldmark has grown together with the other districts and especially the north of the inner city.

The center

The center of the Feldmark is the market square, framed by a modern urban high-rise backdrop, the medical center and the Protestant community center Friedenskirche, built in 1965, with its distinctive church tower. Behind the skyscrapers is the Dorotheenpark on Holzweg with a large-scale playground, football and play areas and a small biotope.

The Hanseviertel

For a few years now, the core area of the Feldmark, which was created in the 1960s to 1980s, has been expanded to include the Hanseatic Quarter east of the railway lines. Here the attempt is being made to locate residential and commercial areas side by side. The living model that the social psychiatric initiative Xanten has created with the Alia house for people with severe mental disorders should also be emphasized .

history

The Feldmark had a predominantly rural character until the middle of the 19th century . A number of farms existed here until the extensive clay deposits in the floodplain were discovered. In what is now the central area on Reeser Landstrasse, the Wesel clay industry (Block company) had its headquarters with huge kiln and drying halls and the Glückauf brickworks in the border area to the neighboring community of Flüren . In 1891 the Protestant and in 1902 the Catholic Feldmarkschule was built, and in 1920 a Catholic emergency church was consecrated, which in 1952 gave way to today's new church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

After the reconstruction of the inner city, which had been destroyed in the Second World War, could largely be regarded as complete in terms of housing at the end of the 1950s, the demand for housing was far from being satisfied. After lengthy negotiations, the city was included in the NRW urban development program. The Feldmark area in the north of the city was planned for the implementation of this construction project.

The first phase of construction began on October 15, 1960, and the second followed on March 8, 1961. Extensive development measures (irrigation and drainage, road construction) had previously been carried out. The overall program comprised over 800 residential units for almost DM 9 million in public funds. The modern face of the newly created district with single-family houses and row houses of various types as well as rental houses soon prompted private clients to build their own homes or even rental houses in Wesel-Feldmark. Due to the favorable location to the Schill barracks, numerous apartments were also built for the German armed forces in the Feldmark .
