The Emmerich railway station is the station of the city Emmerich am Rhein in the district of Kleve . It is located on the double-track electrified Holland line and belongs to station category 5 . Until the opening of the Emmerich-Elten stop, it was the German border station on this route, the Dutch border station is Zevenaar station .

history

All roads lead via Emmerich, poster from the 1920s

The Emmerich station went into operation together with the section Arnhem - Zevenaar - Emmerich on February 15, 1856. The opening of the subsequent section to Dinslaken followed on October 20 of the same year, completing the route. The builder and operator of the line on Prussian soil was the Cöln-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft , which was taken over by the Prussian State Railways in 1879 .

From 1909 to 1929 there was a transition to the narrow-gauge Zutphen – Emmerich tram and from 1918 to 1945 to the standard- gauge Wesel – Rees – Emmerich small train .

On March 16, 1961, the German and Dutch border clearance of goods traffic on the Emmerich - Zevenaar railway line was merged at Emmerich station.

In 2006 the regional train line RB 34 ("The Arnheimer") was put into operation on a trial basis. The connection was operated by the Dutch railway company Syntus with LINT 41 vehicles . In the same year this connection was discontinued due to insufficient demand.

Until 2017, the station was a system changing station , where the voltage supply of the overhead lines between the two power systems (D: 15 kV 16.7 Hz ~ and NL: 1.5 kV =) could be switched. There is now a system separation point (D: 15 kV 16.7 Hz ~ and NL: 25 kV 50 Hz) at the level of the state border. The change between AC and DC voltage (25 kV 50 Hz ~ and 1.5 kV =) now takes place in the Zevenaar Oost train station at the branching out of the Betuweroute from the main line to Arnhem. Freight trains to Kijfhoek therefore only change the electricity system once, while passenger trains to Arnhem change twice.

Location and structure

The station is about a kilometer northeast of the city center on the double-track electrified Holland line . Two central platforms with four tracks are available for passenger traffic . Track 1 is a stump track with an exit to Wesel, tracks 2 and 3 serve as drive-through tracks. The regional traffic trains only used track 1 until the RE19 was extended to Arnhem. The remaining platforms were usually not served by stopping trains. To the north of the platforms, additional tracks are available for freight traffic. In the eastern area there are several sidings south of the main line. In the eastern area there was also the transfer station for the Wesel – Rees – Emmerich small railway, including a wagon hall. The route of this train led past the train station on the street side.

A siding to the port branches off to the west of the station .

The station building is connected to the platforms by a corridor. The former customs building along this route and the roofing over the route were demolished in 2013. Right next to the corridor is a taxi rank and the Emmerich bus station with a park-and-ride facility.

As part of the North Rhine-Westphalian Modernization Offensive 2 (MOF 2) for small and medium-sized stations, the house platform was extensively modernized in 2014. The modernization of the central platform should follow in 2015, but is now planned for 2020.

Rectifier plant

In Emmerich, the railway operated a decentralized traction current converter plant , the rectifier plant (GLW) Emmerich , since the Dutch railways operate with a different electrical voltage than the Deutsche Bahn .

Signal box

In 2012 the Emmerich signal box was replaced by an electronic signal box (ESTW). The ESTW monitors the entire Holland route up to and including Oberhausen-Sterkrade .

Freight transport

The Oberhausen – Arnhem railway meets the Betuweroute in Zevenaar , one of the most important long-distance freight transport routes. A large number of trains run from Rotterdam to Duisburg, some to Genoa, on this every day. These trains are also shunted in the Emmerich freight yard.

passenger traffic

On this route, in addition to freight transport and long- distance passenger rail transport (today without a stop in Emmerich), the Rhein-IJssel-Express ( RE 19 ) runs every hour on the local rail passenger transport .

Long-distance transport

In long-distance passenger rail transport , Emmerich was a EuroCity station until 2000 . Thanks to the use of multi-system intercity express trains, there was no need to change locomotives or stop in Emmerich. As a result, there were no direct daily rail connections to the next (30 kilometers away) large city Arnhem (NL), there was only a bus connection to Nijmegen station with a connection to a regional express to Arnhem Centraal station . The travel time from Emmerich to Arnhem was around two hours. This gap in the timetable was closed with the extension of the Rhein-IJssel-Express from Emmerich via Zevenaar to Arnhem on April 6, 2017.

A pair of night trains from Amsterdam to Munich or Zurich stopped here every day until December 2015 (see development of long-distance traffic on the Dutch route ).

Cross-border local transport has not been offered since 2006 , so the Zevenaar train station in the Netherlands, around 17 kilometers away , could only be reached by rail by a three-hour detour via Oberhausen and Arnhem, including long-distance trains. With the extension of the RE 19 to Arnhem Centraal train station with a stop in Zevenaar in April 2017, this problem was resolved. Abellio Rail NRW won the tender that took place in advance and took over the operation of the RE 19 from DB Regio NRW . Abellio uses five-part, multi-system-capable railcars of the Flirt type , which can run with both German and Dutch voltages. There are also alternatives with public transport on the street .

For the entire public transport (public transport) falling within the true Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) and collective space border of NRW fare .

The responsibility for the local rail passenger transport (SPNV) lies with the Nahverkehrs-Zweckverband Niederrhein (NVN). On January 1, 2008, the NVN transferred its regional rail transport authority to the VRR AöR.

Bus transport

In the immediate vicinity of the Emmerich train station is the Emmerich bus station, which is served by the following lines according to the 2012 bus concept:

The responsible authority for local road transport (ÖSPV) lies with the Kleve district.

Without a tender, the Kleve district committee prematurely extended the award of inter-city bus transport to NIAG until 2019.

Public transport to Zevenaar train station

From the Emmerich train station to the Zevenaar train station there were no direct rail transport offers until April 5, 2017. Since then, the Rhein-IJssel-Express has been running every hour . Alternatively, you can still use the Rijnwaarden Citizens' Bus and the Stadsregiotaxi.

Citizen bus Rijnwaarden

On the street, Zevenaar train station can be reached by taking bus 94 and changing in Elten to the Dutch citizen bus 566. Due to the lack of coordination of the timetables, however, there are sometimes long transfer times. Ideally, a journey time of just under an hour can be achieved.

Since December 13, 2010, a Dutch citizen bus (Buurtbus Rijnwaarden, line 566, hourly) has been running through the Emmerich area. This citizen bus connects the Elten district with the Dutch towns of Spijk, Tolkamer, Lobith, Babberich and Zevenaar. There is a connection to the Dutch rail network at Zevenaar station.

Stadsregiotaxi

The Stadsregiotaxi is the fastest alternative to public transport between the Emmerich and Zevenaar train stations if you reserve in advance .

The Stadsregiotaxi is a Dutch demand-dependent supplementary public transport offer that can also be used for trips to and from Emmerich. After booking in advance by phone or website (at least one to two hours before the desired journey time), you will be transported from door to door in a shared taxi at the desired time, with the starting address or the destination address in the core area of the Stadsregiotaxis, the city region Arnhem Nijmegen (SRAN), must lie. If you continue your journey by train, a journey with an arrival guarantee can be ordered. Arrival up to 15 minutes before the agreed time is guaranteed. The Stadtsregiotaxi can therefore also be used as an additional service to connect the two railway stations in Emmerich and Zevenaar.

Further stations in Emmerich

The Emmerich-Elten stop on the day it was opened

From 1856 to 1966 there was the Elten train station in what is now Emmerich's urban area . Passenger traffic was discontinued as part of the electrification of the line, with the section between the Emmerich system transfer station and the border being fed according to the Dutch traction current system and thus no longer accessible to German trains. With the continuous regional transport service of the RE 19, the stop was put back into operation on July 1, 2019. A provisional modular platform will be in place there until the extension of the line is completed , and the final one will follow four years later.

In addition, the wave station of the Rheinische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft existed between 1865 and 1926 as part of the Spyck-Welle trajectory .

The Praest stop

The Praest stop was opened in 1880 . This was only served by the Rhein-Express (RE 5) between 2007 and 2016 during rush hour in the load direction , i.e. in the morning towards Düsseldorf and in the evening towards Emmerich. Since the Rhein-IJssel-Express (RE 19) has been running, it has stopped here every hour.
