The Zutphen – Emmerich tram was a steam tram put into operation in September 1902 with a route network of 57 kilometers. The line reached the German Emmerich in June 1909 . Places connected to the network were Deventer , Hummelo , Doetinchem , Wijnbergen , Zeddam and 's-Heerenberg .

The initiative came from Mayor Keppels and the food producer Noury & van der Lande . The aim was to simplify the transport of goods from the Rhine port in Emmerich and to expand the route further in Germany, which, however, no longer happened. From the beginning, passenger transport was an important business basis for the company. Until World War I , when the border was closed, many workers drove to their workplaces in the city. By 1929 at the latest, the company was in a deep crisis because buses were competing with the slow and now old-fashioned steam trams. In the summer of 1933, 14 trains ran in each direction on weekdays. In 1934 the Geldersche Stoomtramweg Maatschappij took over the route. Due to the lack of buses, there was a brief revival of passenger transport from 1940, but in 1953 passenger transport was discontinued and taken over by the Verkehrsgesellschaft Gelderse Tramwegen . Some of the passenger cars were used for freight transport. In 1957 the route was removed.
