Wittenberg is a district of the Hanseatic city of Wesel on the Lower Rhine . It is located on the eastern outskirts and has 2,942 inhabitants (as of 2019).

geography

The Wittenberg settlement core is located a few kilometers east of the Wesel city center and directly south of Bundesstraße 58 . This road separates Wittenberg from Obrighoven to the north of it , to which Wittenberg is often included. In the official survey of the city of Wesel, however, Wittenberg is listed as a separate district (officially residential area ) in the Obrighoven-Lackhausen district alongside Obrighoven . In the west Wittenberg borders on Fusternberg , in the south along the Lippe on Lippedorf and the municipality of Hünxe , even if there is no direct road connection over the river. To the east of Wittenberg is the Drevenack district of Hünx .

Retail operations are mainly concentrated around Wittenberg-Platz opposite the Evangelical Hospital Wesel, which is also located in Wittenberg . The Catholic Church of St. Anthony and a primary school are also nearby. To the east of the settlement core are the industrial areas at Marienbusch and at Schornacker. The largest contiguous industrial area in Wesel is located on Schornacker. Even east of it and already outside the city limits is a junction of the A3 . A predominantly wooded and sparsely populated area extends south of the former route of the Haltern – Venlo railway as far as the Lippe. The Niederrhein substation is located on the Lippe .

The predominantly wooded area in the southern part of Wittenberg is summarized in the landscape planning as a 5.79 km² development area. These include the Aaper Busch and Bagelwald forest areas. The Bagelwald, located between Wittenberg and Fusternberg, is an 11 hectare nature reserve that is not accessible and includes a mixed forest with a diverse population of trees. A large part of the Natura 2000 area Drevenacker Dünen also belongs to Wittenberg , which, like parts of the Aaper Busch, is characterized by sandy soil with inland dunes . The Aaper Vennekes area , which is also part of the Natura 2000 area, is located along the RWE road . They are characterized by a heather landscape with several small heather bogs.

History and Development

In 1824 the union of Obrighoven and Lackhausen created the community of Obrighoven-Lackhausen, which was located directly east of Wesel and was independent until 1969. Wittenberg was part of this municipality, but was not even included in a population statistics from 1832. Only the Aapenhöfe (Aaper Höfe) and the single farm Buttendick are mentioned there. Today they are in the Wittenberg district and at that time had a total of 31 residents. To this day, Wittenberg is often added to Obrighoven and did not develop until late when the Obrighoven settlement area encroached on the area south of today's B 58. This includes the St. Antonius Church built for the Obrighoven Catholics, which is located directly south of the B 58 and thus in Wittenberg has. It was built from 1923 on a privately donated property and inaugurated a year later.

In 1910, the construction of the Niederrhein steam power station began on the site of today's substation, thus promoting the electrification of the region. The power plant was destroyed by a deflagration in 1946 and had to be closed as a result. In addition to the substation, the network control center for the Lower Rhine region is currently located there . From 1956 the bagel forest served as the premises of the waterworks II Obrighoven . The water supply to Wesel was temporarily ensured via wells installed there. In 1959, the construction of the Evangelical Hospital in Wesel began between Schermbecker Landstrasse and Kiek in den Busch.

Buildings

traffic

The most important main road is the B 58, which borders Wittenberg to the north and leads west into Wesel city center and further over the Niederrheinbrücke . To the east it leads to the junction of the A3 and further towards Schermbeck . Wittenberg is served by several bus routes.

Although there is no road connection across the Lippe south of Wittenberg, a self-operated yaw ferry across the river, specially designed for cyclists, was set up there in 2005 . The ferry, which can be used annually at least from mid-April to mid-October, was awarded the German Bicycle Prize in 2006 - best for bike in the category “most bicycle-friendly decision”.
