Fusternberg is a district of the city of Wesel on the Lower Rhine . It is located directly east of the city center.

location

Fusternberg is bordered to the west by the city center, which separates it from the railway systems on the Oberhausen – Arnhem line. At the border between Fusternberg and the city center is also the Wesel train station , from where the Berliner Tor as the eastern starting point of the central Wesel pedestrian zone is only a few hundred meters away. In the north Fusternberg borders along the federal highway 58 on the likewise urbanized Schepersfeld , in the northeast on Obrighoven and in the east on Wittenberg . In the south, the Lippe forms the border with the Lippedorf district , which can only be reached via the city center.

history

Today's Fusternberg already belonged to the Wesel city area in the Middle Ages, but was located east of the city walls. It belonged to the Weseler Feldmark, which is not to be confused with today's district of Feldmark north of the city center, but at that time referred to all the outer areas of the city. It was barely populated and characterized by a swampy landscape, which still exist today as field names like Lilienveen or Wackenbruch. Slight elevations bore names that they called "mountains". The name Fusternberg is said to be derived from the name of the first elevation seen from the Rhine. Historically, the name Fusternberg is said to have originated from vörste mountain ("foremost mountain"). However, the name did not come into use until the 19th century. Before that, the small settlements in front of Wesel's city walls were named based on the city gates in front of which they were located. Today's Fusternberg was called "[Feldmark] in front of the Berliner Tor".

In the early modern period, the area was increasingly drained and cultivated in small garden plots because it was still not possible to create larger arable land. Since the Middle Ages, residents of Wesel had also created park-like gardens there. The most important roads that exist today existed as early as 1733, with the exception of the Schermbecker Landstrasse (today's B 58), which was only laid out in 1810 under Napoleonic rule. In 1772 there were 126 people in Fusternberg and in 1792 the number of residents was 183. On September 16, 1809, the Schill officers were shot on the Schillwiese south of Fusternberg . In May 1814, the Wesel fortress, which had previously been occupied by the French, was captured by Prussian troops. Fusternberg had suffered considerable damage in the course of the fighting, mainly because the besiegers were not to be offered any opportunities to shelter there. In the following years the place was rebuilt, but was subject to increased restrictions by the fortress administration. No houses at all were allowed to be built on the side facing the city. Around 1820, first through private lessons and later in a permanent building, the first school in town was built. In the 19th century the population grew and local vegetable production expanded significantly. Around 1900, lettuce from Fusternberg was a particularly popular product. Fort Fusternberg , built between 1856 and 1860, was partially dismantled from 1915 and after 1947 became the Church of Peace of the Holy Angels . After the Second World War, the development of Fusternberg was expanded considerably, so that it grew to many times its previous settlement and became a district with an urban character.
