Lippedorf is a district of the Hanseatic city of Wesel on the Lower Rhine . It is located south of the city center near the mouth of the Lippe into the Rhine and has 316 inhabitants (as of 2019).

Geography and settlement

Lippedorf lies between Wesel and Friedrichsfeld and includes the area of the city of Wesel south of the Lippe. The district is almost completely delimited by flowing waters, namely by the Lippe in the north, the Wesel-Datteln Canal in the south and the Rhine in the west. The canal and the Lippe both flow into the Rhine. To the east, the district encompasses an almost uninhabited area between the flowing waters, some of which are only a few hundred meters apart, and there has a land border with the municipality of Hünxe . The Wesel city center, north of the Lippe, and Friedrichsfeld, south of the canal, are the two neighboring towns that can be reached directly via Bundesstraße 8 , which runs through Lippedorf . The Wesel districts of Fusternberg and Wittenberg are adjacent, but there is no road connection there via the natural Lippe. The Rhine forms the border to the Büderich district on the left bank of the Rhine , but this can only be reached via Wesel with the federal highway 58 . Due to the administrative demarcation, the Lower Rhine Bridge Wesel leading to Büderich is located on the right bank of the Rhine again in the Lippedorf area, as the road previously crossed the Lippe again.

The few hundred residents of the district live in several small settlements, particularly near the B 8 and Frankfurter Strasse. However, there is no fixed town center. There are various forms of business in Lippedorf, especially in the vicinity of the Friedrichsfeld lock . This is just before the Wesel-Datteln Canal joins the Rhine.

history

The history of Lippedorf was mainly shaped by larger courtyards. The Vorstenhof was first mentioned in 1191, at that time it belonged to the Prüm Abbey and lasted for about eight centuries. At the beginning of the 15th century, the Flaem estate was built near the Lippe and controlled important parts of the area south of the river.

Lippedorf gained importance primarily through its location at the southern exit of the Hanseatic city of Wesel and through a fork in the road to Voerde and Dinslaken . There was a ferry across the Lippe and a customs station that helped Lippedorf to prosper in the late Middle Ages. A first hostel was mentioned in 1404 and three other hostels were built by 1680 and this led to great competition. With the lifting of the land tariff in 1807, however, the strategic importance declined sharply.

In 1824 the place had only six houses and was located in the extreme northwest of the parish of Spellen , so it was administered from Spellen. At that time it was not yet separated from Spellen by the Wesel-Datteln Canal, as this was not completed until 1930. With Spellen it later became part of the municipality of Voerde and was not reclassified to Wesel until 1975. An important building is the Lippeschlösschen directly on the Lippe, which was used as a restaurant at the beginning of the 19th century.
