Obrighoven is a district of the Hanseatic city of Wesel on the Lower Rhine . It is located on the eastern outskirts and has 4,979 inhabitants (as of 2019).

geography

Obrighoven is located a few kilometers northeast of Wesel city center and belongs to the Obrighoven-Lackhausen district , which was an independent municipality until 1969. The district comprises an urban settlement area in its western part, but towards the east the area belonging to the district is rural. This area between the center of Obrighoven and the A 3 includes many farms and agricultural areas, in addition there is a small settlement around the street Am Pliesterfeld . There is an industrial area around Rudolf-Diesel-Straße, the possible expansion of which to the east is under discussion. The Issel runs north of the village .

The federal highway 58 in the south forms the border to the district Wittenberg and for a short section to the city-near Fusternberg . The Evangelical Hospital Wesel , located directly south of the street, therefore belongs to Wittenberg. In the west, Obrighoven borders on Schepersfeld , which is directly in front of the city center, along the B 58 branching off federal road 70 . In the northwest is the border with Lackhausen and in the east the district borders on the municipality of Hünxe with its district Drevenack . Several bus routes run through Obrighoven.

History and Development

In the Middle Ages, Obrighoven belonged to the parish of Wesel around the city. It mainly consisted of the Hasselt farming communities near today's Brüner Landstrasse (B 70) and blisters. The latter is still recognizable today at the Pliesterhof, which is part of the settlement on Pliesterfeld. After the Reformation around 1540, Obrighoven was mainly inhabited by Calvinists , but had neither a Protestant nor a Catholic church. Churches for both denominations did not emerge in Obrighoven or Wittenberg until the early 20th century. The Reformed School at Lauerhaas was established in 1684 on the initiative of the city of Wesel. Today the district is the main location of the municipal comprehensive school at Lauerhaas. In 1824 Obrighoven merged with the neighboring Lackhausen to form the municipality of Obrighoven-Lackhausen, which Wesel co-administered until 1848 and only became independent afterwards. In 1832 Obrighoven had 507 inhabitants and was therefore slightly larger than Lackhausen.

Obrighoven north of the B 58 is sometimes called Lauerhaas to differentiate it from Wittenberg. This name goes back to the term Lurhuus , which referred to a guard on today's Brüner Landstrasse (B 70). The church at Lauerhaas, completed in 1931, as well as the historical and current school, refer to this place name. The church building survived the war almost unscathed, although Obrighoven was affected by the air raids on Wesel in 1945 and some buildings were completely destroyed. After the end of the war, the church served, among other things, as accommodation for refugees from the eastern regions. In 1975 it was remodeled and in 1996 a community center was added. One of the local clubs is a riding club called RV Sankt Hubertus Obrighoven, which was founded in 1925 and whose riding hall is now in Wittenberg. With the Ostbad, Obrighoven also had a swimming pool, which was closed in July 2005 mainly for cost reasons. In general, Obrighoven has grown significantly and become more urban since World War II. With 4,960 inhabitants in 2015, Obrighoven alone has more inhabitants than the entire municipality of Obrighoven-Lackhausen, which had 3,192 inhabitants in 1939.
