Diersfordt is a district of the Hanseatic city of Wesel on the Lower Rhine . It is located in a forest area northwest of the city, belongs to the Bislich district and has 276 inhabitants (as of 2019).

geography

The place Diersfordt lies in the middle of a wooded area, which is under the name Diersfordter Wald under nature protection, and is bordered in the west by a large quarry pond called Diersfordter Waldsee . It consists of Diersfordt Castle and a directly adjacent settlement and is located a few hundred meters southwest of Bundesstraße 8 (here under the name Landesstraße 7). At Diersfordt there is the junction of Mühlenfeldstraße to Bislich, which runs directly south of the village. South of the road in the forest is a military cemetery and at the edge of the forest between Diersfordt and Bislich there is another cemetery. Neighboring districts, in addition to Bislich to the west, are Flüren to the southeast , Bergerfurth to the northwest and Hamminkeln to the northeast, some distance away . Administratively, the district also includes part of the forest area right next to Flüren. In the Diersfordter Wald there is a game reserve, which was created for wild boars that settled there towards the end of the Second World War.

history

The history of Diersfordt was mainly shaped by the castle, which was first mentioned in 1334. The residents were initially subject to the jurisdiction of Bislich until the place became independent together with the castle in 1498, but still belonged to the Duchy of Kleve . In 1564 the lords of the castle converted to the Protestant faith and offered the residents of the surrounding Bislich parish the possibility of Protestant church services in the castle chapel. At the end of the 18th century, Diersfordt was still part of the Duchy of Kleve and had 175 inhabitants. At the beginning of the 19th century it became an independent municipality in the office of Ringenberg and agriculture and forestry remained formative for the place. 1910 Diersfordt had 114 inhabitants. After the end of the Second World War , a larger military cemetery was created south of the village. In 1975 the previously independent community was incorporated into Wesel.

Castle and ice cellar

The castle was first mentioned in 1334 and changed hands several times over the centuries. Among other things, it was fought over in the Thirty Years' War between the Dutch and Spaniards, whereby it was badly damaged. In the 18th century, a lot of building work was carried out so that it became the residence for the von Wylich family who owned it. On December 21, 1928, it was completely destroyed by a major fire and rebuilt by 1931. In 1945 it was damaged again during the war. In 1996 and 1997 it was extensively renovated. It includes several outbuildings, including a chapel.

The ice cellar belonging to the castle was previously used to cool perishable food and has been used as a museum since 2004. The museum deals with the history of the castle, but also with other exhibitions from the region. Events such as B. Lectures take place.
