history

Antiquity

The Hamminkelner Issel was already considered a natural border in times of the ancient Romans. The Romans also erected border walls here that were congruent with the Klever Landwehr . At the time of the Great Migration around 350 the Issel formed the border between the Christian Franks in the west and the Saxons in the east. The river thus formed the border between the denominations.

middle Ages

In 779 Charlemagne crossed the Issel lowlands with his army in the area of today's “Römerrast”, located between the Hamminkelner districts of Dingden and Loikum. In 843 the Carolingian Empire was divided by the Treaty of Verdun along the Issel as a border river into the Eastern Empire of Ludwig the German and the Middle Empire of Emperor Lothar. In 946 Hamminkeln was first mentioned in a document as "Hamwinkile".

Early modern age

Hamminkeln became Protestant in the 16th century. There is evidence that the previously Catholic pastor Georg Hagedorn became Protestant with his congregation in 1555, the year of the Augsburg religious peace . From 1568 an eighty year war raged between Spain and its Dutch provinces in Hamminkeln . The Dutch made Calvinism effective on the Lower Rhine and the church structures changed; in 1642 there were five influential families in the village. For example, Alexander von Spaen only leased his farms in Hamminkeln to Reformed people from Brünen . Especially in Wesel, but also in Hamminkeln, the further influx of Dutch religious refugees led to the fact that originally Lutheran congregations switched to Calvinism. While the area was temporarily under Spanish rule, Catholicism gained in importance. This change of rulers and religions was mostly violent. Although they were in the minority, the Reformed formed the community of Hamminkeln until it was united with the Lutherans in 1817/1818, which later became the Evangelical Church of the Old Prussian Union throughout Prussia .

In the district of Ringenberg, the moated castle of the same name, built by Sueder von Dingden, served as a border fortress. In the Thirty Years' War destroyed the castle was a castle in the style of the Dutch Baroque through the kurbrandenburgischen rebuilt Field Marshal Alexander von Spaen. During the Seven Years' War , the Brunswick Lieutenant General Philipp von Imhoff defeated the French troops under General François de Chevert on August 5, 1758 in the Battle of Meer (French Affaire de Meer, today Hamminkeln-Mehrhoog).

Contemporary history

On March 24, 1945, as part of Operation Varsity, large areas of Hamminkeln were used by the Allies as a landing zone for gliders and parachutists. Their goal was to build a bridgehead over the Rhine near Wesel after the Rhine crossing in Arnheim / NL had failed. Operation Varsity was the largest Allied airborne operation during World War II.

On January 1, 1975, as part of the second restructuring program, the previously independent municipalities of Hamminkeln and Ringenberg of the former Ringenberg office , the municipalities of Loikum and Wertherbruch and the village of Mehrhoog (from the municipalities of Haffen-Mehr and Haldern) of the former Haldern office and the municipality Brünen of the former office of Schermbeck (all in the former Rees district ) and the Westphalian municipality of Dingden in the Borken district have merged to form a new municipality. At the same time, significant parts of the former districts of Dinslaken , Moers and Rees were merged with parts of the districts of Borken and Recklinghausen to form the new Wesel district. Hamminkeln has held the title of town since 1995 after crossing the limit of 25,000 inhabitants .
