Clever Landwehr
The Klever Landwehr , also Klevsche Landwehr and Drevenacker Landwehr , is an approximately 40 km long Landwehr in the Wesel and Borken districts . Some parts of it are still preserved today as a rampart, other parts are used as drainage ditches, and some sections have disappeared on the surface.
The fortification line is shown in the cadastral map of Kleve from 1733, on the map of the Rhine from Wesel to Duisburg by Karl Ludwig von Le Coq from 1812 and on the "Map of the Rees District under the Romans" by Jacob Schneider from 1868 still shown in full.
The Landwehr is on the right side of the Lower Rhine . It begins to Schneider east of Hünxe , leads north and crosses the Lippe at Gahlen . From Schermbeck it runs southwest to Schermbeck- Damm , Wachtenbrink and Drevenack -Peddenberg. In a northwesterly direction it leads past Wesel-Obrighoven and then meets the Issel . On the left side of the Issel, it leads from Blumenkamp and Hamminkeln in a north-westerly direction past Kesseldorf, Römerrast and Werth to Isselburg and Anholt.
Schermbeck-Damm is a system of “two earthworks around nine meters wide and up to two meters high, which are bordered by three four-meter-wide trenches that are still around 1.50 meters deep today.” The northern sections are preserved as simple straight land ditches in the water-rich area and contain flora and fauna worthy of protection.
The Landwehr is usually interpreted as a medieval building, for example as the border marking of the Duchy of Cleves . Schneider assumed an origin from the time of the Romans in Germania .
