biography

Claudia Wissmann was born as the daughter of a toy dealer and a blacksmith in Dingden on the Lower Rhine. From 1983 she studied visual communication at the University of Applied Sciences in Krefeld . From 1985 to 1992 he studied fine arts and film and video art at the Münster Art Academy with Inge Mahn , Gunther Keusen and Lutz Mommartz . From 1988 to 1989 the artist spent a year at the University of Reading in England. There she studied under the influence of the installation artists Richard Wilson, Marc Camilla Chaimowicz and the two light artists Ron Haselden and the New Zealander Bill Culbert.

In 1989 Claudia Wissman's first light installation with daylight was on view under the title Light movements - far five windows in the University Art Gallery in Reading . In this installation, the artist herself acted as an actor, in the relationship between light, shadow and identity. In 1991 the art historian and curator Schneckenburger came to the Kunstakadamie Münster, who later showed some of Wissmann's works in various exhibitions.

After further installation experiments, she finally turned to light art in the context of architecture. In addition to her studies at Reading University , the films and body sculptures by Rebecca Horn , works by Maya Deren and performances and projections by the artist Nan Hoover in the context of light and shadow were significant and inspiring for Wissmann .

Her main interest today is the relationship between light and architecture as well as light and nature . Wissmann uses both artificial light and daylight in the most varied forms of reflection as a design medium . The aim is not to illuminate buildings or natural forms, but to change perception and reinterpretation through light. In recent years, Wissmann has also increasingly dedicated himself to working with children. The Mobile Atelier , founded in Hanover with the artists Ute Heuer, Kirsten Mosel and Andrea von Lüdinghausen , organizes one-week workshops in kindergartens and introduces children in the age group from 3 to 6 years to the most varied forms of art.
