Manfred Schneckenburger

Manfred Schneckenburger (born December 1, 1938 in Stuttgart ; † December 3, 2019 in Cologne ) was a German art historian , university professor and artistic director of international art exhibitions. He was the only one who directed the documenta in Kassel twice (1977 and 1987).

Life

Manfred Schneckenburger studied German, history, art history and ethnology. At first he worked as a high school teacher. Then he completed a traineeship at the State Gallery in Stuttgart and wrote art and theater reviews. From 1969 to 1972, Schneckenburger worked as an exhibition assistant at the Olympic Committee in Munich and from 1970 onwards he was involved in the organization and implementation of the Olympic exhibition on world cultures and modern art in Munich in 1972. From 1973 to 1974 he was director of the Kunsthalle Köln .

Schneckenburger died shortly after his 81st birthday in Cologne and was buried on December 27, 2019 in Cologne's Melaten central cemetery.

documenta 6 and 8

Schneckenburger was appointed artistic director of documenta 6 , which took place in 1977 in Kassel. He then worked as a freelancer, doing exhibitions and published books and catalogs on 20th century art. In 1984 he was appointed artistic director to Kassel for the second time and curated documenta 8 in 1987.

Teaching

In the years between and after his two-time documenta curator , Manfred Schneckenburger also worked as a university lecturer , for example in Bochum. After the end of the d8 he took over the documenta professorship at the comprehensive university Kassel (GHK University Kassel) until 1989.

From 1991 he was professor for "Art and the Public" at the Art Academy Münster and until his retirement in 2004 also its rector .

Lichtsicht Biennale

In 2007, Schneckenburger was appointed curator of the “ lichtsicht ” projection biennale in Bad Rothenfelde , which he directed until 2013. Every two years, Schneckenburger invited video artists from all over the world to project their current works onto the graduation towers in the spa gardens of Bad Rothenfelde.

Works

Manfred Schneckenburger has published numerous books and catalogs on art and architecture and was co-author of a two-volume edition on the art of the 20th century.
