A light installation is an animated form of lighting a large interior space or a suite of rooms, a building , a fountain or a public square .

Today they are mostly combined with music and controlled by computer , but they can also have automatic cycles or cycles triggered by visitors. The technical execution is mainly carried out with spotlights , special lighting fixtures or image projectors .

Outside, light installations usually take place in the evening, for example at the start or end of festivals . Inside buildings , they are often used at concerts , increasingly also at exhibitions or to support art tours, at vernissages and in some larger show caves .

Light installations in and on various structures such as churches and bridges are a focus of the Luminale , which has been taking place every two years in Frankfurt am Main since 2000 . The Luminale is a festival of light culture that takes place parallel to Light + Building , an international trade fair for light and lighting technology.
